curry don't!

thursdays i only have one class, so i got to come back to my apt early and relax, since my brain is basically fried. today's therapy included repotting plants, watching the kim possible marathon on the disney channel (*squee!*), and making my very first curry evah!

now, basically i threw in what i had on hand - potatoes, onion, chicken, zucchini, tomatoes, and some peas, plus garlic, curry powder, turmeric, and some salt & pepper. everything was going good until part way through cooking the curry i realized i forgot to start the rice to go with it.

then i realized that i had no dish large enough to cook the rice in the microwave(after my experience cooking rice on the electric stove i have decided to never do that again). so i tried making a tiny amount of rice in a dish i figured was too small anyways - and i was right, the water all boiled out and i had a chewy and largely inedible slab of rice to accompany my curry. ah, kitchen adventures...

things i won't do next time - i will use lowfat instead of nonfat yogurt (better taste and texture for this, i think. i am reminded of my problems using nonfat cream cheese in black-bottomed cupcakes. fat is good for cooking, bad for my tummy T_T). Also nixing the zucchini because it made the curry way too watery (added some cornstarch to counter), and I will set the heat even lower than i had it once i added the yogurt. (i think i will mention frequently from now on my loathing of the electric stove.) oh yeah, and i'm going out this weekend and buying a proper size corningware dish in which to make rice. >_<

so verdict on "my first curry" - edible, delicious even to my long curry-deprived palate, but definitely needs more seasoning, less water, and non-curdling yogurt. oh yeah, and rice that isn't cooked into a leathery cake >_<
