I'm irritated because I've misplaced the cord that connects the camera to my computer. So in lieu of the massive amount of food pics that are languishing on my camera, I'm posting more china food adventures from this past summer.
Here are a couple of dishes from quite possibly my favorite restaurant in the entire world. Seriously. The Golden Peacock (金孔雀 Jin1 Kong3que2) is a restaurant near BeiWai and Minzu Daxue in Haidian District of Beijing. I ate dinner at least once, if not twice a week there while I was studying at Beiwai. The restaurant serves the cuisine of the Dai people, one of China's 56 recognized ethnic nationalities.
The Dai live in Yunnan province in southern China and their languages are related to Thai. Some of their main agricultural mainstays include rice, pineapples, and potatoes. All three things that I love. A lot of their food is sweet, but can also be spicy.
Potato Balls - 土豆球 tu3dou4qiu2 - served with a spicy sesame-soy dipping sauce
Just a pineapple you say?
It's actually pineapple rice - 剥落饭 bo1luo2fan4 !! In the background you can see a lemonade and the remnants of a fresh tomato platter topped with sugar.
The pineapple is hollowed out and the fruit is mixed with short grain rice and then baked in the pineapple itself. When I ate at a Dai restaurant in Yunnan province the rice was purple instead of white. In fact, it wasn't until late in the semester that we actually learned the word for peacock, and everyone just referred to it as the "Pineapple Rice Restaurant." ^_^
Some of my other favorite dishes included a loose loaf of sweet ground pork sliced into medallions and served with steamed greens, mijiu - sweet rice wine, kongcai 空菜 (hollow vegetable, also known as water spinach or water convolvulus) served with a spicy sauce, and stir-fried chicken and pineapple cubes.
I did a quick search and Time Out Beijing actually lists them!!!

The authentic, inexpensive Dai food served here means that there is always a queue. Savoury potato balls, pungent salad with glass noodles, sour and spicy rice noodles, pineapple rice, deep-fried spare ribs, fish in lemongrass and meat cooked in a bamboo tube, are all skilfully prepared. Generous portions mean you won’t leave hungry.
