We have a TiVo. We've had it for less than six months, and it replaced an older TiVo. That TiVo did malfunction, but it was older than a TiVo should be (I don't remember how many years, just that it was a very early model and the early ones didn't usually last long, though that one did). I love it very much! It has locked up on us once, which gives it a small hate factor, but any computers do crap like that *sometimes*, but only once for us. I love it lots and lots, and it is perfect for us. And now you can transfer the monthly service from one box to the next, so if you sign up now and pay monthly, you seem to get that monthly fee forever. Extra awesome that T has had it so long we pay like $9 a month for service on it.

That *is* awesome!
Honestly, everyone I've spoken with who has a TiVo seems happy with it. And everyone I've spoken with who has a Comcast DVR for any length of time has said something along the lines of "Yeah, it's great, but..."
"Comcast" DVR encompasses two types, at least here in Southern CT.
Oops. Good point. (We have a Motorola.)
my friend Chad uses a Windows Media Center PC for his DVR needs, and he likes it well enough. Me, I'm just lazy enough that I'll pay the cable company to rent one.
Good to know that there's someone out there who's happy with the do-it-yourself option.
We fall into the "lazy enough" category, too, and honestly, we'll probably stay there. I just wish we didn't have to change our DVRs more often than our rolls of toilet paper! ;)
I have to explain mine, too... :) DirecTV DVR, no problems so far except that last night they "updated" the menu displays so that it's all white text on light blue (they claimed this was more readable, but no!). And it's probably safer to replace "heartache" in that last with "explosions and fires."
With that said, you *can* find DVRs at tag sales and the like; I know I've had people try to sell me a dozen or so this past summer alone. I also know someone with a spare TiVo that they were willing to give me, that perhaps you would like? He's in CA, though, and shipping might be a pain.
You can also buy them in stores, though I admit to being afraid of that.
Hmmm...I don't know. Although I don't like having to replace the DVR, at least we *can* replace it without any hassle or expense.
I hate it when they muck around with the display! Comcast turned ours bright green once. (I think that was a mistake, not an intentional "improvement.")

Well, if they ever do roll it out, I'll be sure to look into it.

Bright green! Yow. Yeah, I'm not pleased. Oh, well...

Actually, that was me-- I was playing around with the settings and I thought it looked better. You disagreed.
