Martin had been very surprised, in disbelief, really, when Mack came to fetch him and told him he had a VidCon call. He'd long since stopped waiting in the lobby during visiting hours for visitors that would never come. He takes a deep breath.

"I won't lie, it's been bad, but the pain is subsiding and I'm stepping down off the painkillers. How have you been?"

"I give her kisses for many reasons, but I think you for providing another," he says with a smile before Martin goes on.

"I am fine, as always. My only sadness is that there is nothing I can do to help you. I'm glad to hear that you're doing better."

"Well, I'm really at a point where I have to help myself. I'm just rather lonely and it's difficult to start over in a new town, let alone in a new country."

He chews his lip and hangs his head a little.

"And I hate knowing that if he asked me to come back, I'd run right into his arms. That's the worst of it."

And something he'd never confessed to the Center staff.

"I'm proud of what you've done for yourself so far. Ghouling is a process I don't necessarily condone, as you know, but I know a large part of your bond for Gregory is genuine love... and unfortunately, it can be more difficult even than blood magic to put aside."

He sighs.

"If you really should need me, Martin, I can consult with Pearl to see if she would be willing to move to that side of the Channel. You have been sorely abused by one you called 'lover'; I'd hate to be one who abused you that you would call friend."

"There is no cure for love, I'm afraid, and it is a very irrational condition. I no longer have any reason to love Gregory, and any reasons I had before were false. I know now that I was nothing but an ornament to him. But I love him all the same. I almost feel sorry for Simon."

He shakes his head.

"I can't ask you to do that, Robert. I know of Pearl's horror of water, and she's very young besides. I can't ask her to cross an ocean for me."

He takes a breath.

"But, perhaps, I could eventually be transferred to the Center in France. It'd be more like what I'm used to, Americans are very strange, and we could visit one another more easily."

"Oh, Robert, I'd so love to see you. No one else has come for me. Apparently most of my friends were only friends so long as I was attached to Gregory."

He forces himself to perk up.

"But I met a nice bloke here at the Center. Connor Bronti, and his husband Mik. He's finished and gone home now, but he visits once or twice a week."

"You've met one of Granya's brood? Lucky you. A more warm-hearted bloodline you'll never find. I'm glad to hear you've got friends, though. All the more reason for me to visit. I haven't met Gerasimos yet, though she's told me of him and his husband."

"Aye, they're here. Seems Valentino's Brat tried to forcibly ghoul Connor. He spent a month here healing up from it. We were in the same Group and one day after a visit with Mik, he just scooped me up like I weighed nothing and took me back to my room. He held me and talked to me for hours. He's an amazing man, and Mik's nice too, though he can't come visit as often as Connor."

Martin taps the monitor to clear the picture.

"Apparently he and Con were friends from Uni, only Con went for Mik instead of Anthony, because well, who wouldn't pick a real man over that spoiled little git. Anthony can't take no for an answer, as you well know, and he knocked Connor unconscious one day, drug him up to his flat, tied him to the bed, and ghouled him. Don't know the details coz Connor won't say them out loud, but I gather he was pretty vicious about it."
