The Doctor pokes his head in from the door, spots Rose at the bar, and heads over. "Ah, here you are," he says when he gets closer. "I was wondering where you'd got off to."
It's about that time she orders a basket of chips. Hot, golden and delicious. She pops one in her mouth and turns when he gets within talking distance.
"Came in for a pint and a new earring I think. Broke this one in the fuss," she says, holding up said mangled earring.
"Oh, I think that's fair," he says with a wink. "Bar, I'll cover her new earring, whenever it's ready."
He turns back to her and steals another. "And I wasn't following you. I was just... wondering where you'd gone. Must have been talking to you for at least a minute before I realized you weren't around."
And lookie there, once the tab is settled, the earring in question is laying on a napkin. She takes it and compares it to the older one. A moment after her inspection, she seems satisfied.
"Thanks," she says, giving him a bright smile as she puts both of them back in.
She watches him for a long minute, tucking her hair behind her ear. "Talking about what?"
He shakes his head, turning away before she can see his expression fall. "It was selfish of me. Madame du Pompadour was an important part of history, and I didn't have the right to try and change that."
And maybe if he tells himself that enough times, he'll believe it.
That turning away is enough of a cue to Rose. It gets her to shovel more chips into her mouth and get a few drinks of her pint before murmuring to the Bar for a refill.
"You gave her hope," she says quietly. "And you gave her someone to believe in, same as me."
She doesn't touch him, she can't. Not when she's got one question in her head.

The chip theft is noted and ignored, as she takes a long drink of beer.
"I didn't think you were following me, or I'd have ordered you some tea."

"I'm sorry you lost Reinette," she says. It's...almost genuine. "I know you wanted to get her away from there."

It's hard to explain what she thought.
"It doesn't matter. We're a team, yeah?"

"Wouldn't drop me off for some French nobility," she says with a grin. "You're more British than that."
She's teasing, of course.

"I know. Probably for the best; health care's a right pain."
