gamepost: The Playground (kids-only)

Picture the best playground you've ever seen, whether it be at a school, a park, or a private home. Now picture one ten times better than that. This is that playground.

There are swings. There are merry-go-rounds. There are ridiculously tall slides and jungle gyms. There's a huge, sprawling "castle" complex that you could get lost in for hours on ( Read more... )

The Doctor is standing on the edge of the castle, eying it dubiously and hugging a large stuffed TARDIS to her chest.

And trying to decide what to have a go at first. LOTS OF THINGS TO EXPLORRRRRE~

Well, one kid's found something to explore pretty easily. The wild-haired little fellow with missing front teeth got hold of a rope or a tire swing or something and is taking the AAAAAAeeeeeeAAIIIIEIaaaaEEEEEHHHHAAAaaaEEHHHH Tarzan-style route out of the treehouse. And looking mighty proud of himself in the process.

There is a sandpit. It is a good sandpit. There have never been any cats in this sandpit.

Gordon's going to be working on his motte-and-bailey castle construction now, okay?

Sameth watches the castle building,

"I think that wall might fall down."

"Yeah?" Gordon looks at the walls doubtfully, then pushes his glasses back up his nose. "Huh. Maybe if I change the angle..."

He'd been more concerned with keeping the sides of the trench around the whole thing from caving in. Architecture isn't his thing, not yet, anyway.

"I think if you shore it up more, the walls at home have lots of stuff around them and under them."

A four-legged robot is pacing restlessly around the base of the tree in which the treehouse is built. This is because his eight-year-old mistress is somewhere up in said treehouse, and while the robot is very nimble, he can't quite manage ladders.

The robot's getting stared at by a wild-haired gap-toothed tanned boy of perhaps six or seven. Robot. Whoa.

... waaait.

"Hey, robot!" calls Adrian warily, grasping his stick. (Of course he has a stick. He's six. Why would he NOT have a stick?) "Where's yer head?"

The robot looks up (inasmuch as he can without any neck articulation) and makes a puzzled noise. It has a head! It's just not separate from his body, that's all.

"Ain't you gonna talk?" says Adrian, leaning a little further forward. "I thought robots could talk."

'Course, he thought they had heads, too.

It's an awesome playground, this is true. But Claudia... isn't really in the best of moods to properly enjoy it. (Nor is she anywhere near as smiley as she is in the icon. It's been a rough week.)
She's sitting on a swing - not even swinging, just sitting and staring into space. She could really, really use a distraction.

Would a shabbily dressed Afro-Asian girl a couple of years younger than Claudia be a sufficient distraction?

No?

What if said girl is riding on top of a robot?

...well, it's a start, at least.
"Nice robot," she says, half surprising herself in starting the conversation. (It's just... there's a hole there, you know? And even a robot isn't going to fill it.)

"Thanks!" says the other girl. "My dad built 'im for me. His name's D0G."

Sam's never seen a castle that's not stone before and he was hoping to sneak into the forge after his sword work but this is cooler.

A boy of about twelve with a Charter Mark on his forehead and in a rather sweaty tunic laughs and heads for the jungle gym, he might be trying to take it apart with lots of little spells or at least figure out what's holding it together.

The pigtailed girl currently hanging by her knees from said jungle gym would appreciate it if you didn't take it apart just yet, Sameth.

She offers the new arrival an upside-down wave.

Its not coming apart anyway, there's just lots of lights and he keeps burning his fingers but does look up and wave.
