You know him. The one who always shows up in the middle of the story, honey-tongued and sweet as sugar, beguiling and enticing and manipulating the protagonist. The one who, like all of us, does actually have to work for a living. He walks into the bar today in the process of folding up a lovely red velvet piece of cloth. Upon registering where he's ended up, he grins, a quick gesture that reveals two rows of well-cared-for white teeth. He likes this place. It means with a meal without any effort or risk on his part, and it means a place to park for the night. So he heads over to one of the couches by the fire, bringing up the red velvet cloth to his face and breathing in deeply (and that smile is nothing if not subtle) before wrapping it about one hand. His prize. His girl.

You know that look that people get on their faces when they've fallen completely head over heels in love? It is that look that graces Edward Bloom's face today as he stumbles into the bar. He hardly seems to notice his surroundings as he practically falls into a chair, flopping one arm down onto the tabletop and staring out straight into the middle of nowhere. Good luck getting his attention. (And if those are his feet you're trying to step over? He isn't going to move them.)
