Billy's in plainclothes again tonight. He's curled up by the fire, thinking about his conversation with his alternate universe friend. He's been thinking about it a lot.

He's staring at large mug of tea like he's expecting it to give him answers.

Cosmo is also over by the fireplace, doing his best to ignore the fish (seriously, fish?) and making notes about something in a notebook. It could just be homework-related... but then again, it may not be.
Given that he's a math major, the narration is going to say 'probably not homework.'

Absorbed as he is by his own thoughts, he can't help casting a curious glance at the guy with the notebook.

He's not entirely in the mood for socializing, but he nods politely anyway.

The motion catches his eye, and almost startles him.
"--Oh. Hi. Sorry, I'm not... bothering you, am I?"
Ah, socially awkward technophiles.

Indeed.

"Oh, no. Not at all."

He glances down, taking a sip of his rapidly cooling tea.

"I can shut up, you know.. if I'm bothering you."

You know what happens when people look thoughtful curled up by the fire?

They get OCTOPUS!

A big, plush, pink one being held by a little blonde girl.

Well, okay, she's not little.

Actually, she's a teenager.

But trust her, Billy, it'll make you feel better.

Cue bewilderment.

"Uh... hi?"

"Hello," says the octopus.

From the girl, but that can change.

"I don't like it when people are sad, so I wanted to make you smile."

She's quietly giggling after this.

He's not exactly sad, but that's beside the point.

"Well, thanks."

Random strangers trying to cheer him up is still a really weird feeling.

Penny wanders in and over to a table with a mug of hot tea. She curls up in a chair herself, pulling a book out of her purse. Unfortunately, she's not at her most observant, and misses Billy by the fireplace.

She might not notice him, but he definitely notices her. She's one of the few people he wouldn't mind talking to right now.

"Hey."

Penny looks up and smiles. "Hi, Billy. How're you doing?"

"Not too bad. Been doing some thinking."

Since the narration just remembered there's a rain check to be had:
Billy could be forgiven for not noticing the somewhat heavyset woman in black sitting up in the rafters (nearer to the wall than over the room at large). After all, not being seen is part of what she does for a living.
But that 'being watched' feeling will probably prick at the back of his neck sooner or later. She's noticed him, and... well. She's trying to puzzle out whether the uncanny resemblance is simply that, or if Sam snuck in when she wasn't paying attention.

(The narration is totally cool with this one waiting till Billy and Cosmo are done, if that's easier, but wanted to call in the rain check while she was thinking about it.)

"Wow, congratulations."

There is blinking.

Lots of blinking.

- no, scratch that. Max is bouncing on his heels.

"I would have invited you but it was kinda spur of the moment."

"So who's the lucky g-... person?"
