Dinarzad, Flower of the Sultanate and latest and most honored wife of a lord with a good many titles of his own, steps through the arch first. She lowers her head, as befits a dutiful bride, and waits for the footsteps of her servants and attendants behind her. (Like the Star in the stories, Dinarzad is never alone.)
But the servants do not follow, this time, and her husband does not wait for her on the other side of the arch. She stands very still in the entranceway, holding her ring-laden hands up in wonder.
Beneath her silken veil, her collar set with amber and her painted face, Dinarzad is barely sixteen years old.
[Dinarzad is a character from Catherynne M. Valente's Orphan's Tales series. Cat Valente, being fan-friendly as well as brilliant, has issued
blanket permission for fanworks based on
her writing. I'm trying out a new character, so this post is open to all tags, but I may run out of voice and freeze threads unexpectedly. Ping AIM: manuscriptgeek with any questions.]
