Dan is seated in the most secluded part of the bar today, hunched over a table as he writes in his notebook.

His pencil's moving very quickly, pausing only to erase or check something on his calculator - or to glance up at the Window.

Glance. No, glances are supposed to be quick. He's not glancing. He's staring, mesmerized, and when he catches

"It's nice, isn't it."

When people say things like that, they tend to say it nicely. There's no niceness in the way Ben says it.

Dan doesn't have to look up to know who's speaking to him.

So he doesn't.

He does tense up, though, and his pencil goes still.

"Stop being such a chicken. I'm not going to do anything to you because I can't."

He swallows and slowly looks up at Ben, but doesn't meet his gaze.

"What do you want?"

Not too far from him at all, a boy sits on the rafters and puts bow to strings.

A moment later, music drifts from the instrument, smooth and sliding.

Dan is immersed in his work just enough to not notice the music, at first. When he finally hears it, he lifts his head and listens, trying to pinpoint the source -

- when he looks into the rafters and sees the boy sitting there, he blinks.

As the music drives on, his eyes close and he sinks into the melody. The sharp, driving violin notes interspersed with the long slow pulls, the almost discordant notes pulled across the strings with a master's skill. As he finishes, though, he feels eyes on him.

And looks down at Dan.

Dan doesn't know whether to pretend he wasn't staring or to compliment the boy.

... he'll go with the latter.

"You play very well," he says quietly, restlessly tapping his pencil against his fingertips.

This is supposed to be the deck, but even the fact that the deck has decided to become a bar can't ruin Desmond's mood, because it's still a bar on Penny's boat.

He catches a glimpse of the other man while getting a beer from Bar, and approaches to confirm it.

"Faraday?"
