Write a letter to your younger self.
Dear Smaller Self,
You probably find it weird now that you're writing to yourself, but I promise you that it'll all make sense once you decide to work as a secretary for Dunder-Mifflin. Yeah, I know, it's that little paper supply manufacturing company that you see around sometimes. You have higher hopes for yourself than secretarial work. No little girls really dream of becoming a secretary. It's even an ineffectual compared to say Staples, but it's the company with the biggest heart in the world.
Michael, your boss, will offend you from day one, but I promise what you get out of the job is worth it. Two things will really keep you there: 1) The inability to really believe that your employees and your boss exist and aren't cartoons or a living sitcom and 2) Jim Halpert. The whole wackiness that life brings you? Most of it is because of Dunder-Mifflin.
I feel like I should start earlier for you, little self. Like, you should watch out when your older sister Lena starts to steal your butterfly hair clips because she'll lose them within a week. She thinks just because she's older that she can get away with these things, but you need to lay down the law. Or else you'll just start letting everyone else walk all over you. And you should really stand up for yourself more often. You don't want to be like me.
In High School, all the crayons you begged mom to get you will come in use when you make one of the best pieces ever out of melted crayon bits and paper. Your art teacher, Mrs. Parker will encourage you to sketch because she thinks you can do more than rebel by melting bits of crayon to paper in the sun. She's right. You'll love drawing more than anything. When things look dark or when you're angry at the world, you'll draw and you'll create. It's really important, Pam, to create instead of destroy.
Roy will ask you out. Do it. Go out with him. You'll have the worst first date in the world, but when you look at him you'll see stars in your eyes. You'll even lose your virginity to him.
Roy is good, but you should think bigger than Scranton. Or else you'll be here your whole life. Think bigger than Roy. Even when your world spins on its axle and he asks you to marry him, tell him that you want more. That you think you two should see other people and really figure out if you want more than each other.
When you get an opportunity at work for an art internship, you should take it. No matter what anyone says. Remember that feeling when you draw and just say yes. Go to New York. Find yourself.
Jim Halpert will be your best friend since day one of working at Dunder-Mifflin. Help him with all his pranks, leave him the red jelly beans and find any excuse to be around him. He's your light and he'll fall in love with you. What you feel for him will be like nothing else. Say yes or say no to Jim, but you should give him something final instead of leaving him in limbo. If you don't, you're going to lose him and you don't want that. Believe me, I know.
Please, let Jim love you. No matter what you do, anything else that might change, you should let Jim love you. Because he'll show you how to love you too.
Love,
Your Future Self,
Pamela Beesly.
