[p.s. (pre-script) you can get a better look at any of the pictures just by clicking on them! isn't that nice??]

i think you can understand how frustrating it is to become lost on a trail in the middle of the woods when there are signs that make it look so easy.

yes, dear emily, go left. just GO LEFT. and keep going. but at some point, even after traversing fallen logs

in the highest of optimism that you will, indeed, be able to continue on the trail you've worked so hard to find, you realize it is futile and you must give up. you have come to

the end of the trail. but not to worry! because remember when you were standing right next to this rocky ledge

and you looked up through this grove of trees

and saw the biggest and scariest birds you have ever seen?!?! well, if you stand there long enough, perching your camera on a random patch of mud and grass trying to take a picture of yourself, like so:

(notice the slight angle of the photo, due to the slight angle of the random patch of mud and grass), then maybe by the time you enter back out onto the path and enjoy the view for a moment

you will suddenly be startled to look up just in time to find that vulture -- who had only moments ago (well, maybe fifteen minutes) left its nest and scared the shit out of you -- returning to its nest with food in its claws for its little baby birds way up there in the cliff wall.

and then maybe you'll stand there for another fifteen minutes trying to capture just how big these mothers are, for example by getting them in a shot next to a tree which it is bigger than.

eventually you'll just go home and try to tell everyone how big it was, unsuccessfully, and feel like a dolt for being excited about a bird that "is very common here". but don't worry, two days later it will snow

and you'll watch mermaids, which your best ex-housemate ever sent you in the mail over christmas, and you will feel alright again, even though no one can appreciate the size of the buitre común except for those who have stood right beneath it and gasped for air.

the end.
