My caps don't do justice to the hyper-saturated technicolor look to the film at all. The scene with the sisters is way tame in comparison. It's really visually....stimulating. Plus, it's ULTRA-'60's.......like, even the carnie guys wear go-go boots. Yeah. I know.

I've only seen scenes from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, but from what I remember it would appear Jacques Demy loves, loves, LOVES color. Isn't the floor of the mom's jewelry store covered in plush, pink carpet?

I know Rochefort isn't as acclaimed as Cherbourg, and the statement that Cherbourg is a masterpiece is not open to dissention or debate, but I don't know if I can agree.

With musicals, it's already so unreasonable for an audience to buy into the people on-screen periodically breaking out into song, that there has to be a real clear motivation to do so. If not, the audience doesn't buy into the film's action.

The musicals that succeed convey a real emotional build-up to the point where regular dialogue doesn't suffice to communicate they're thoughts and feelings. They are totally overwhelmed, and the only cure is to sing and dance. That's how I've always understood people approached structuring their musicals.......But Cherbourg is all sung. It seemed like there lacked any climaxes. It was like the film's events were all sort of muddled, indistinguishable, and brown.

I definitely want to give it another shot, it's just always checked out when I go to rent it. So, it must just be my mood that day and the parts that I saw! No doubt it's wonderful, and I know Deneuve looks an absolute angel it. What a doll.
