Chapter Four - The Engagement Ring

Junsu came out of his bedroom still clad in pajamas as he scratched his head and arms, occasionally yawning. He walked into the kitchen sleepily and was greeted by Jaejoong who was cooking, he had an apron on.

“Good morning, Su.” Jaejoong looked at him and smiled before back to his cook. He opened the fridge and took two eggs.

“Morning, hyung.” Junsu sat on a chair and yawned. He watched as Jaejoong sliced the onions with skilled and the sound of the wooden matched the knife was such a lullaby for him, making him lowered his head before he lost control. “Ouch!” He yelped in surprise when his forehead collided with the marble table, making him wide awake.

“What’s wrong Su?” Jaejoong turned his head to Junsu, frowning.

Junsu pouted as he shook his head, hands rubbing his forehead. He didn’t want to tell his hyung, no way.

Jaejoong struggled before he took the ladle and tasted the soup. He nodded slightly when the taste was good. “Hush!” He slapped Junsu’s hand away when the latter was trying to reach the bowl of soup. “You haven’t washed your hand.” He reprimanded. “And you better take a shower first, Su ya.”

Junsu pursed his lips in defiance but complied anyway as he made his way towards the bathroom. He knew better to not disobey Jaejoong when it was the time for eat or he wouldn’t get any.

Jaejoong smiled secretly seeing Junsu walked stagger before he processed to make the breakfast. A few minutes later, he had done. He took out a plate and placed two omelets onto it before he took two bowls and processed to pour the soup into them. He set up the table and arranged the foods before he called Junsu.

“Su, breakfast~!” he exclaimed loudly as he took off his apron and placed it on the headboard of the chair.

“Coming~” Junsu ran toward the kitchen, already dressing up nicely and his face was shining again. He sat down on the chair across from Jaejoong.

“Bon appetite~” They said happily in unison before eating the foods.

They ate quietly, merely enjoying their breakfast with the fresh morning air entering through the window that opened intentionally for ventilation.

Minutes later, Jaejoong stood up and brought his dirty dishes into the sink. He was a slow eater actually compared to his friends, but his meal wasn’t much so he finished it earlier than his brother. And he had to prepare for their lunches anyway.

He washed the plates thoroughly and he put them in its place. He wiped his wet hands with a cloth before he opened one of the shelves and pulled out four wooden boxes. He took rice and placed them into the box. He put mackerel on top of the rice and squeezed it very hard in a wooden box. When it was squeezed enough, he cut it into pieces. He did the same to the other three boxes and arranged them nicely, just because he believed that pretty looking food tasted better.

Junsu walked to the sink, carrying the dirty dishes and washed them. After put them into its place, he leaned backward, resting both of his hands onto the sink to support his body as he watched over Jaejoong.

“Hyung, are you done?”

“Wait a minute.” Jaejoong countered as he placed the brown lid on top of the wooden box and handed it over to Junsu. “This is yours.”

“Thank you, hyung.” Junsu accepted the wooden box mirthfully and put it into his bag.

Jaejoong also put the other three boxes into his bag before he locked all the doors and the windows, making sure that everything has been locked before they both went off to school.

“Yeoboseyo?”

“You have to go buy a-”

“I’m busy.”

“Clear your schedule!”

“Can’t we buy it on the other day?”

“No, you can’t.”

“But Dad-”

“Just do what I say. Do not argue!”

“Fine!”

And he hung up.

+++++

“Hyung~” Changmin whined as he stroked his belly, a sign that he was hungry.

“Oh,” Jaejoong muttered as he opened his bag and took out three wooden boxes of lunch. “This is your lunch, Min.” he handed one of the boxes that was slightly larger compared to the other boxes to Changmin.

“Wow, thank you hyung.” Changmin grinned widely as he took the box from Jaejoong. He then opened it quickly. He was curious as to what the menu of his lunch today. “Whoa~ Japanese cuisine~!”

“What is it, hyung?” Yoochun inquired as he leaned forward to Changmin’s box, trying to see their lunch.

“Oh, it’s battera.” Jaejoong countered as he handed a box to Yoochun. “I don’t really have time so I made simple dishes.” He explained mirthfully.

“Oo…” Yoochun’s mouth formed an ‘o’ as he accepted the box. “Thank you hyung.” He said thankfully.

“You’re welcome.” Jaejoong merely smiled. He was happy that his cooking was appreciated by his friends.

Junsu also opened his box and they five ate the lunch happily. The three of them prefer Jaejoong’s cook than the cafeteria’s food. Compared to the taste and the look, Jaejoong’s cook was much better, besides they didn’t need to spend more money for lunch.

Jaejoong was about to shove the battera into his mouth when his cell phone went off. He took out his cell phone from his jeans’ pocket and pressed the green button without looking at who was calling.

“Yeoboseyo?”

“Hey.”

And Jaejoong almost choked on his food when he heard the voice of the caller. He then pulled the cell phone away from his ear and brought it in front of his eyes.

Jung Yunho.

He put the phone back against his ear. “I’m still wondering how you can know my number.” He wondered out loud.

“I always have my way, Jaejoong.”

“Tsk!” Jaejoong rolled his eyes, sneering.

“Ow~ why are you so cold to me? Don’t you miss me after a few days we didn’t meet each other?” Yunho teased and Jaejoong could hear a faint chuckled on the other line.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Jung but not one bit I miss you.”

“Don’t you know? Your nose would be going along if you lie.”

“Whatever.” Jaejoong said in annoyance. “I’ll hang up.”

“Eits, No, don’t! There’s something that I want to say.”

“Hurry up!” Jaejoong demanded. “My lunch break will cut shorter if you don’t tell me now!”

“Yah yah yah~ aren’t patient, are you?”

“I really will hang up.”

“Aish. Okay! You’re no fun.” If Yunho was in front of Jaejoong now, Jaejoong could see the pouting on the other man’s face.

“Whatever.”

“Fine! Today, we will go somewhere. Get ready, I’ll pick you up after school.”

“What if I don’t want to?”

“Well, it’s not my responsibility if your parents scold you.”

“Dang!”

“Okay. Get ready. See ya.”

And he hung up before Jaejoong could respond back. “Aish!” Jaejoong grunted and shoved the phone back into his jeans’ pocket.

“Yunho hyung?” Junsu inquired as he lifted an eyebrow, having overheard the conversation between Jaejoong and the caller.

“Yeah.” Jaejoong confirmed and nodded. “That man could only compel others.” He commented with an annoyed tone.

“What does he want hyung?” Yoochun butted in.

“He will pick me up after school and take me to a place I don’t know where.” He countered nonchalantly as he took a piece of battera and shoved it into his mouth.

“Oh.” Changmin nodded. “Just enjoy it then.” he suggested, shoving another piece of batter into his mouth.

“True.” Junsu agreed as he nodded. “And you haven’t seen him for some time.” He commented, pointing his chopsticks at Jaejoong’s chest.

“That is it Junsu.” Jaejoong pointed out, slapping the chopsticks away from his chest. “I’m happy if I didn’t see him. Because every time I met him, I will miss my step and fall!” He made an annoyed face. “He brings bad luck.” He added and sighed.

“I think it’s not his fault.” Changmin corrected. “You’ve been tripping over nothing and missing a lot of steps anyway.”

And he was hit by the lid of the lunch box.

+++++

The sun didn’t shine right on their head again when they finished their class and walked toward the front gates. Jaejoong sighed when he saw Yunho was already waiting there at the usual spot. They, as in Yoochun, Junsu, Jaejoong and Changmin approached him.

“Hey hyung, long time no see.” Changmin said with a smile.

“Yeah, I have been busy lately.” Yunho countered and smiled back, “Want me take you guys home first?” He offered.

“Oh, no need hyung. We still have something to do before go home.” Yoochun answered.

“Okay.” Yunho nodded then turned his gaze to Jaejoong, “Ready?” he grinned.

Jaejoong merely sighed as he walked to the passenger door and stood still. He looked at the Yunho, at the door and back at Yunho who was looking at him in confusion. “Dolt.” He mumbled when the man didn’t catch his act as he opened the passenger door harshly.

Yunho looked at him for a while before he chuckled and made his way to Jaejoong. “I’m not a dolt.” He corrected as he slammed the door shut before he opened it again, motioning Jaejoong to go in.

“Pssh.” Jaejoong sneered as he got into the car and Yunho quickly closed the door.

The other three merely chuckled seeing the eldest’s antics.

“Yunho Hyung,” Junsu exclaimed as he approached the man. “Bring him home before night please. He still needs to make a dinner for me. Hehe.” He smiled sheepishly.

“Sure.” Yunho smiled, raising his thumb up before he got into the driver seat.

“See you hyung.” Yoochun waved his hand to them mirthfully.

“Enjoy the date~!” Changmin shouted just before the car drove away.

“So…” Junsu trailed off. “What will we do?” he turned his body around to face his boyfriend.

“What will we do?” Yoochun asked back as he raised his eyebrows in confusion and looked at Changmin.

“Yah!” Junsu slapped Yoochun’s arm. “You said we still have something to do before we go home!” he reminded him.

“Oh.” Yoochun muttered as his mouth formed an ‘o’. “Well, I don’t know actually.” He countered, stretching his head and smiling sheepishly.

“Should we follow them?” Changmin suggested as he grinned, lifting his eyebrow playfully.

“No!” Junsu exclaimed quickly, his tone was rising up. “I mean… if you want to do that, just do it by yourself but I am not going.” He added as he shook his head. “I don’t want to die by being kicked by a horse.”

“Oh my…” Changmin muttered as he rubbed his forehead in frustration. “It’s the effect when you lived in Japan for too long.” He sighed heavily and walked away, leaving the chuckle Yoochun and the confuse Junsu.

+++++

“Why do you take me here?” Jaejoong frowned as he turned his gaze to the man next to him. He was now standing in front of a jewelry store, a very large and luxurious one. He was about to turn around when Yunho didn’t respond him but Yunho had pulled him into the store.

“Our parents told us to buy an engagement ring.” Yunho explained once they had entered the store.

“What-”

Jaejoong’s words were cut when a waitress approached them. “What can I help you, sir?”

“I want to buy an engagement ring.” Yunho countered, eyes looking around at the store.

“Over here, sir.” The waitress led them into one of the rooms where all the engagement rings were on display.

“Do not be vague and argue.” Yunho reminded the younger man, his tone was a bit annoyed. “Choose one you like quickly.” He said firmly.

Jaejoong merely nodded. He thought the faster he chooses was better because it meant he would be home soon. He walked around the room, hands on the glass counter, looking at the engagement rings closely.

Yunho also observed some engagement rings but none caught his attention. He had decided to just let Jaejoong to choose it.

Jaejoong stopped walking when a ring had caught his attention. He put both of his hand on the glass counter that barrier him and the ring. He looked at the ring closely and smiled. The ring looked like it had two rings that assembled. The inner ring was a gold-colored, while the upper ring was a silver-colored, with a small diamond in the middle. The ring looked simple but elegant.

“Hey!” Jaejoong gestured his hands, motioning Yunho to come to him.

“What?” Yunho asked as he came over to Jaejoong. “Have you chosen?”

“Yes.” Jaejoong confirmed as he nodded. “This.” He pointed a finger at the ring that had caught his attention.

Yunho looked down the ring that Jaejoong had pointed at and he nodded slightly. He summoned the waitress and told her to show them the ring that Jaejoong had chosen.

The waitress opened the glass counter and took out the ring. “This is, sir.” She handed it to them.

Yunho took the ring and observed it before he looked at Jaejoong, asking his hand. “Your hand.”

“What for ?”

“To try it out of course.” Yunho countered as he rolled his eyes.

“Oh.” Jaejoong mumbled as he reached out his hand and Yunho held it. Yunho then slipped the ring into his ring finger of his left hand, making his heart skipped a bit.

“It’s good.” Yunho commented thoughtfully as he nodded and pulled out the ring. He took the match ring that slightly larger compared to Jaejoong’s and tried it into his own ring finger. And it did fit. “We will buy this.”

The waitress nodded and took the ring back to process the next step of payment.

Jaejoong sighed in relief. He was glad that he had chosen the engagement ring and thought he could come home soon but he was wrong when Yunho suddenly dragged him into another room.

“Why did you take me here?” he asked as he saw lots of rings on display. “Aren’t we done?” he raised his eyebrows, a puzzled expression on his face.

“What, we haven’t bought a wedding ring yet.” Yunho countered, looking at Jaejoong in disbelief.

“Wedding ring?!” Jaejoong shouted with a high-pitched voice and Yunho quickly covered his ears. “If you continue to shout like that, aren’t you afraid your voice cords would be break?”

Jaejoong stepped onto Yunho’s foot hardly.

“Ouch! that hurts!” Yunho exclaimed as he raised his left leg, eyes looking at the leg and his hand nursing it. “Lucky you didn’t wear high-heels.” He murmured and earned another step on his right foot.

“Stop joking!” Jaejoong exclaimed. “Why should I buy a wedding ring now, anyway? It’s still too early.” He huffed indignantly. He had his arms folded across his chest and puffed out his cheeks.

“Your parents didn’t tell you?” Yunho furrowed his eyebrows. “Our marriage has been set up and it is in two weeks.” he told him matter-of-factly.

Jaejoong looked at Yunho in disbelief, his lips parted and his eyes widened in shock. He would have screamed if Yunho didn’t cover his mouth with his hands and reminded him that he did not want to get embarrassment screaming in the public place.

+++++

Jaejoong walked into his parents’ house, followed closely by Yunho from behind. After bought the rings, he insisted to take him to his parents’ house first before going to his apartment.

Jaejoong and his parents were living separately. He and his brother lived in an apartment near their college while their parents stayed at home. Their parents had planned to stay in Korea for some time, to prepare their older son’s wedding at the same time taking care of their existing business in Korea.

Jaejoong walked into the living room indignantly and saw his mother was talking with a phone on her ear.

“Eomma?”

His mother immediately turned her head towards him. She looked a bit surprised to see him standing behind her but then his mother smiled.

Mrs. Kim mouthed ‘Wait’ to his son before she returned to the phone and whispering something before she hung up as Jaejoong and Yunho went closer to her.

“Good afternoon Mrs. Kim.” Yunho bowed politely.

“Good afternoon Yunho.” Mrs. Kim smiled and turned her gaze to his son who looked sullen. “What’s wrong honey?” She asked as she motioned them to sit on the couch and she stroked his son’s hair lovingly.

“Eomma, where is Appa?”

“In his office.” His mother countered, eyes motioning at the door near the staircase.

Jaejoong got up and went to his father’s work room, leaving the other two without words.

“Er, Yunho.” Mrs. Kim trailed off. “Can you wait a minute here?” she asked kindly. She wanted to follow Jaejoong after seeing a sour look on his face but she didn’t have a heart enough to just leave her soon-to-be-son in law alone.

“Sure.” Yunho smiled as he nodded.

Mrs. Kim smiled thankfully at him before she made her way to his husband office. She opened the door, and saw her husband and Jaejoong were sitting on the couch and his son was whining to his husband.

“Appa, why didn’t you tell me if the wedding date has been set?” Jaejoong pouted as he crossed his arms against his chest.

“Err…” Mr. Kim muttered, trying to find the perfect reason. “Appa deliberately want to give you a surprise?” he laughed nervously.

Jaejoong puffed out his cheeks. “But Appa, I just got engaged. Why do we get married so soon, anyway?” he asked and without giving his father a chance to reply, he continued. “As I know, usually, the distance between the engagement and the wedding is at least six months.” he pointed out while raising six fingers up to his father.

“We were exceptions Jaejoong.” His mother butted in and walked over to the two.

“But Eomma~” Jaejoong whined as he turned to his mother. “I got engaged with him last month but we are already about to be married?” he asked in disbelief, his tone was slightly exaggerate. “Why is so sudden? After all why should in early February anyway? Why not the next year when I graduate from college?” He tried to argue with his parents.

Jaejoong knew he exaggerated the matter but he didn’t want to marry so soon. He felt that this marriage was too quick. He was still a junior college student and soon he would be a senior student on his college. He did not want to get married before graduate.

“That is because,” his mother countered, putting her hands on Jaejoong’s face and looked at him lovingly, her face beamed, “Yunho’s mother and I had been counting, the first February is coincided with the birthday midway between you and Yunho!” she gushed as she clapped both her hands and smiled happily. She looked like she was dreaming something mirthfully with her grin tugged on her face.

Jaejoong’s jaw dropped down, mouth opened, eyes wide, not believing just because of a reason like that why he would get married in early February.

‘This is not the way I want!!’ he screamed indignantly in his head.
