I have not received a decent explanation of what a "maid" does, aside from it consisting of some form of profession. It sounds alike to an attendant, in a way.

Ah, well... That's pretty much it! They're servants who serve a specific master or house. I'm a butler myself, which is basically the same general concept as a maid-- just a lot less frills and lace.
