Title: No reacher, no settler.
Pairing: Dean/Cas, Sam/Jess
Disclaimer: I own none of these characters, even if I changed some of their last name.
Rating: PG-13 I guess
Warnings: Does foreplay counts as a warning? Jealous!Dean ? Oh and this is unbeta'ed
Spoilers: 4-17 only, though there aren’t really mentions of what happens in the episode.
Summary: Dean Smith is the director of sales and marketing and is seeing Castiel Jones, head of Human Resources.
A/N: I was inspired by an episode of HIMYM, found the plot interesting so I went with it and I wanted to write something in the AU of 4-17 “It’s a terrible life” episode. There’s a lot of dialogue, I’m sorry I didn’t give it more narrative; I’m just being super lazy lately. Hope you enjoy this nonetheless, reviews are very much appreciated (I actually crave for it).
Word Count : About 2500
“So, lately, Mike’s been acting all defensive and sulky, and I don’t even know why.”
“Well, I mean, it’s understandable, how would you feel if you were told you were the reacher and Mike was the settler?”
“Wait, what? How do you know that?”
“I, um, I might have mentioned it to him.”
“Tess! What the hell?”
“It’s not my fault! He didn’t understand why you were never jealous or anything, so I explained it to him.”
“What did you tell him?”
“Well, I told him that in every relationship, there’s a settler and a reacher. You know, one person reaches for someone out of their league, the other one settles for someone below theirs. It’s sad, but it’s true.”
“Well thanks for that, now our marriage might as well be ruined.”
“Please, don’t be silly. He’ll get over it, Mike is a great guy. Plus, whom is he going to turn to? He’s the reacher, he will never find someone better than you.”
“Okay, stop saying that. It’s all just bullshit, I don’t believe it. There might be a reacher and a settler in some relationships, but that is not our case.”
“Come on, sweetie, there’s always a reacher and a settler…Take Dean Smith from sales and marketing and Castiel Jones from human resources for example. Everybody knows Jones settled for Smith!”
“Nuh-uh, Smith totally is the settler, he is so fine I still have these hot dreams about him sometimes.”
“Really? Oh look, Jones is coming. Now look at him, how all these vultures are flying around him. Seriously, I don’t know how Smith can date the guy and not go crazy, he’s already scary jealous.”

“Hey babe,” Cas greeted his boyfriend as he sat down in front of him with his lunch. Dean barely responded to the kiss and took another bite of his salad, broody face on. “What’s wrong? Adler still giving you a hard time?”
“No it’s not that, I mean, yeah he’s still a pain in the ass, but um…” Dean trailed off and played with a cherry tomato, “Would you say you were the reacher or the settler in this relationship?” Dean blurted out before he could stop. He couldn’t help it, he had to know, after overhearing what the two ladies had said right behind him, who, by the way, had not even realized he was right there, hearing everything.
“What?” Castiel chuckled nervously, dipping his French fry in his sauce au poivre that accompanied his steak. Some people found that weird, but it was actually a very good combination.
“Do you think I’m the reacher?”
“I don’t even know what that means,” Castiel replied absent-mindedly as he proceeded to cut his steak.
“Never mind,” Dean dropped it, feeling utterly ridiculous for even thinking like that. Women. That’s exactly why he preferred men over them, they were so full of shit sometimes. He hated acting like a freaking teenage girl, but Cas really changed his life and as you can see it wasn’t always good.
“All right, but you know you can tell me anything, okay?” Castiel took Dean’s hand in his, looking at him with his most intense gaze and smiled slightly.
“Yeah, I know,” Dean returned Cas’ infectious smile, too weak to resist Cas’ charm, even after all these months together. They had started dating almost a year ago, right after Cas had joined the company. It would be awfully cliché to say it was love at first sight, but it actually was-on Dean’s part, anyway. For Cas? Not so much. Castiel Jones was the hot new director of human resources after Bobby Singer had retired, and every single person in the company had been interested in him, most of them still were. But at the time, Castiel was already seeing someone and Dean didn’t like that so he took care of it, he just never told anyone how he did.
“Isn’t that heartwarming?” Sam chimed in and sat down beside his brother with his own tray. “Hi Cas!”
“Shut up, Sam,” Dean scowled at him.
“Hello, Sam,” Cas greeted Sam, his boyfriend’s brother. Sam wasn’t really high up in the ranks of the company, but it was just a part time job to pay for his college fees. Sam was a smart and good kid, he would surely become a great lawyer someday.
“Have you seen that reporter who’s doing an article on the company? What’s all the buzz about him?” Sam asked eagerly as he started attacking his sandwich.
“His name is Chuck Shurley, he’s an editor for some big magazine, didn’t get the name,” Castiel answered him between two bites, “Anyway, he’s here to interview me.”
“Another interview?” Dean said suspiciously, “It’s weird ‘cause there seems to be a lot of editors who want to interview you, what’s up with that, huh? I mean, just last week, that blonde chick came from a fashion magazine, what the hell?”
“For God’s sake Dean, are we still on this? I told you, she was doing an article on how our employees are dressed and all.”
“Right, and how exactly does it have to do with human resources?”
“That’s exactly what I’m in charge of! You know what, I give up,” Castiel sighed and pushed his chair back, “I’m going to get some wine,” he added and left the table.
“Okay, what’s up your butt?” Sam asked as soon as Castiel left.
“Nothing,” Dean grumbled.
“Right, you’re acting jealous-which, okay, isn’t really new-but you’re worse than ever, geez, man, chill,” Sam said, “It’s a wonder how Cas puts up with you.”
“Mind your own damn business, okay?”
“Seriously, Dean, what’s up?” Sam asked more calmly, knowing that it was the only way he was going to get anything out of his brother.
“D’you think that…um…Cas uh…settled for me?” Dean asked hesitantly.
“Absolutely,” Sam replied quickly and smiled sympathetically.
“Totally,” Jo joined them and put her tray next to Castiel’s, stealing some fries off Sam’s plate. “Hey boys.”
“What?!” Dean sounded offended.
“Well, you’re the one who’s insecure all the time,” Sam explained, putting some distance between them because of how red Dean was
getting. “Look, Cas is more confidant and doesn’t get all worked up when someone tries to flirt with you, which is rare too.”
“First, people come onto me all. The. Time. And second, I’m not insecure! I just uh, don’t like sharing,” Dean took a deep breath to calm down, “And why does everyone think Cas settled for me? I’m just as good as he is!”
“Dean, you’re my brother and I love you but come on, you’ve gotta admit,” Sam raised an eyebrow knowingly, “Cas is a chick/guy magnet! I mean, if I were into guys, I would’ve tried to steal him from you BUT I’m not into guys, so you can save your wrath for other people,” Sam put up his hands defensively. “Besides, why do you think I try so hard to keep Jess away from him as much as possible?”
“What, that’s why you never…” Dean trailed off as realization struck him and his eyes went wide.
“Exactly,” Sam confirmed.
“He’s right you know, if Castiel wasn’t already with you, I would’ve long tried to hit that,” Jo said casually but soon understood that Dean was in no mood to hear any joke, if the glares she was getting were any indication.
“All right, look at him right now, he’s been desperately trying to come back to our table for five minutes because people keep ‘bumping’ into him,” Sam pointed at Cas chatting with some new intern. “Look at her, she’s practically throwing herself at him!”
Dean watched the scene with horror and made a run for his boyfriend, grabbing his arm and hissed at the college girl: “Hands off bitch, he’s taken.”
“Dean! That was terribly rude,” Cas admonished him with a whisper, “I’m sorry Laura, I’ll see you tonight, all right? Okay see you then.”
“What the hell, Cas?” Dean looked back and forth between him and the aforementioned Laura as she was leaving. “What, you’re going on a date with her?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Laura is my intern, she asked for my help to review a paper she’s doing for school,” Cas replied and took a sip of red wine as they walked back to their table. “And please let go of my arm, you’re hurting me.”
“Ah, sorry,” Dean released Cas’ arm immediately, his boyfriend’s grave voice scaring the shit out of him. He sat back down at his seat quietly; ignoring his brother’s questioning look and Jo’s giggles. Their lunch break didn’t last for long and Dean remained quiet through the rest of it, trying to organize his chaotic turmoil of a mind.
------
“What are we doing here Dean? Cas is going to be back any minute,” Sam said impatiently as he guarded the door to Castiel’s office.
“Pfft, right, as if that douchebag of an editor was going to be done with him so soon,” Dean scoffed and approached Castiel’s bookcase.
“Jesus, Dean, is that a camera? You’re spying on Cas now?” Sam sounded exasperated as he watched his brother hide said device on one of Castiel’s bookshelves.
“I know that chick is up to no good, I just want to make sure she doesn’t try anything on my boyfriend.”
“You can’t just keep every single person away from Cas, you know, considering how many of them there are!”
“What?! Who else tried to make a move on him?” Dean said menacingly.
“You know what, I give up,” Sam sighed. “Dean, they’re coming, hurry up.”
“Ok, I’m done here, let’s go. But don’t think we are done, I want you to make a list of the bastards who’ve been trying to steal my Cas.”
-----
“Oh my God, is he drunk? Sam, does he seem drunk to you?” Dean came closer to the screen, having troubles to see clearly. The webcam didn’t really have high resolution so it wasn’t that easy to see.
“I, uh, I don’t know, maybe?” Sam shrugged.
“He is! Look how inebriated he is! Trust me, I know how he looks when drunk, and he definitely is!” Now Dean sounded downright panicked, “Did she get my Cas drunk?! What the hell?!” Dean went back and forth between his computer screen and his brother’s amused face behind him.
“Calm down, Dean, come on, it’s nothing,” Sam tried very hard not to laugh but Dean was already glaring at him like a murderer looking at his next victim. There was nothing funnier than a drunk Cas. No scratch that, there was nothing funnier than Dean’s face right now. His brother looked scared, confused and angry altogether. As for Cas, he was all flushed and babbling and just looked terribly adorable. And yeah, there was always a downside to being drunk, Cas was no exception. In Cas’ case, it was mainly the lowered inhibition part. When he was drunk, Cas tended to be very handsy and…well not so inhibited.
“That skank, she intoxicated him!” Dean looked furious, his face was completely red and sweaty now. Sam had seen Dean this worked up very very rarely and he sincerely felt for the cute and-dare he say it, slutty intern who was currently making a move on Cas, running her hands up his chest as she put his hands on her hips.
“Okay that’s it, I’m going in there right now!”
“Dean, hold on!” But Dean was already out the door, and Sam soon saw his brother storming in Castiel’s office on the computer screen.
------
“Get your filthy hands off of him!” Dean all but roared at the woman who was licking his boyfriend’s neck like a sucupus while Cas was starting to doze off on his desk. She startled a little, letting a little yelp escape her lips, soon followed by giggles. Great, she was drunk too, that was just peachy.
“My, you are hot too,” she purred as she approached Dean, sliding a finger along his chest. Dean could barely register her gesture that Cas was right behind her, looking more sober than ever, and damn scary.
“Get. Out. Now.” Cas’ stentorian voice made her literally jump out of surprise and fright. She did as she was told and practically ran for her life out of the office.
Now that she was out of the way, Dean could take a better look at Cas. He was all disheveled, his shirt was almost completely undone, save for a couple buttons-damn that bitch, Dean added as an afterthought-and his hair was as messy as ever and his intense blue stare was directed directly at him. It was the hottest thing. Ever.
“Hey baby,” Dean grinned as he stepped closer.
“Shut up and c’mere,” Cas said sharply and grabbed Dean’s head with one hand while the other grasped his Dean’s tie, pushing him on his desk and attacking his mouth wildly. Dean liked this version of Cas, all bossy and wild and hot. He even got Cas drunk sometimes, just to have him like this, doing filthy things to him.
“What were you doing here?” Cas asked him as he grabbed Dean’s crotch suddenly, making him jump. “Were you stalking me?”
“No, sir,” Dean replied between short puffs of breath.
“So you just happened to be at the right place, at the right moment, right when things were getting interesting?” Cas said slowly as he planted little kisses up Dean’s neck, his hand still not releasing Dean’s dick.
“Interesting?” Dean started to pull away but Cas didn’t let him and held him still.
“Relax, I’m just teasing you,” Cas said as he resumed the kissing thing, “You still haven’t answered my question.”
“Okay, fine, I was kinda…um…watching you,” Dean admitted, not really in any position to resist.
“Of course you were,” Cas looked up and stared right at him. “Did you really think I wouldn’t notice the webcam you put up there?”
“You…you knew? The whole time?” Dean asked, flabbergasted. Or at least, a little. Cas seemed to have a way to know everything.
“Mhhhmm,” Cas mumbled as he bit Dean’s earlobe, “You were a very naughty boy tonight Dean, don’t you trust me?”
“Of course I do,” Dean managed to reply as Cas’ other hand gripped his hip tightly. “I just didn’t trust her, and apparently I was right not to.”
“Apparently,” Cas grinned, “But still, you should’ve trusted me and respected my privacy. That’s why I think you need to be taught and punished.”
“It’s fine by me,” Dean grinned back and captured his lover’s lips in a passionate kiss.
-----
“Dude! Gross!” Sam complained from Dean’s office when he glanced at the screen and saw the scene playing out in front of him. Turned out Cas could get jealous too after all.
