So now I live in a federal disaster area. That's an interesting development. You guys, last week I was hand watering plants in my garden, checking daily for drought/burning from 90 degrees and NO RAIN.
Thankfully, we picked our home well, and were able to walk to the grocery store, and be safe and mostly dry at the top of our hill. At the bottom of our hill is Linden Ave, where a group of teenagers got caught coming home, and two were swept to their deaths. It's very scary in Boulder right now.
We were lucky. We're nowhere near any flood plains, and on a steep incline. Our gutter still broke and poured water in through the basement window, spreading just enough water over the floor for our stored things to start soaking it up. We moved our things, threw away tons of wet cardboard, vacuumed and bailed water for an entire day... Yesterday we had sun, nearly all day. We started reclaiming house, filing insurance claims, and called the landlord. Last night I personally ripped up the carpet and padding, as it had already started to smell moldy, and Mike is allergic. (I'm just asthmatic.) We've done our best to photograph and video the damage and cleanup. (thank you smartphone)
It's not going to be a quick recovery for the state of Colorado, especially Boulder County. Schools are trying to re-open on Thursday. My road is still closed, as are many side streets. The highway out of town had been flooded, several exits and roads have collapsed and washed away, and the buses aren't running. Mike works in Denver, but gets paid leave. I work in Boulder, but haven't been able to go all week. Zoey had the good timing to get sick Sunday night, so we got her into the doc, got meds, and she started feeling better before things got bad Wednesday.
The good news is, we're physically safe, we borrowed equipment to get the water out, we have food, power, supposedly safe water, and have a good insurance case for the rain damage. I'll be keeping in touch, hopefully things will get better.
