1999-2000 is a pretty clear watershed in Clark and Bruce's friendship. There are probably a variety of reasons for this--one key is that the people writing several important titles were clearly fans from the age when Superman and Batman were buddies. This is another interesting thing about ( Read more... )

Well in "For Tomorrow" was a very unique ocassion, Clark was being extremely angsty about not being on earth when the vanishing happened and Lois being possibly dead, he was also taking the whole "I'm Superman and Clark is a lie" thing to an extreme.

It's interesting to note but before he figures out how to use the vanishing and before he goes to use it on himself (which might potentially kill him) he goes to see Batman. The moment is mostly Superman being an ass to him and having a really weird identity discussion. Superman keeps telling Bruce to refer to him as Kal-El and when he calls Bruce Batman, Bruce tells him to call him Bruce to which Supes responds "You haven't heard a thing I've said? Have you? Bruce is just a mask" and flies off while Bruce stares at him with his mask off.

After the whole thing Bruce is left perplexed and confused in the cave and keeps wondering what the hell Clark was trying to say, until it hits him that Clark was going to use the vanishing on himself and he frantically calls Diana to stop him.

Basically the whole thing was Clark going to see Bruce and making sure he was going to be OK before he went and possibly killed himself (which is the whole reason Diana goes to stop him, she thinks he's going to commit suicide). When Bruce asks Superman the reason for his visiting him, and the only time Clark is truly himself, he tells Bruce "I need to know you'll find peace" and you know they're going to have a moment but it all goes downhill when he calls Bruce Batman which causes Bruce to angrily remove his hand from his shoulder and say "Kal-El... My name is Bruce" so yeah you had Clark trying to say bye to Bruce and be grimdark while trying not to tip him off as to what he was going to do and going all wrong about it, while Bruce being an expert on THOSE things figured it all out (but not before wondering why Clark was behaving strangely).

So yeah the lack of buddies and snarkyness was due to Clark being unfriendly and OOC and Bruce reacting to it. I kind of wish there was a follow-up to this with Clark coming back home with Lois only to have Diana and Bruce already waiting for him and having a good talk about what he did.

Ah HA! Thank you! I had only ever seen the two pages or so where they're both acting so odd (and yet SO PRETTY), so I'm happy to finally get some context! Okay, I need to read this one...I think I have it somewhere I just need to get my butt in a chair and read it. :)
