Action Comics #886.  Writers:  Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann;  Artists:  Fernando Dagnino and Raul Fernandez

Action Comics, starring Thara Ak-Var as Flamebird and Lor-Zod (Chris Kent) as Nightwing, is nowhere near as fun a read as Rucka's other work on Detective Comics, but I still like reading it because there are gems of information about Nightwing and Flamebird, and that means ideas for fic!

In #886, Chris asks Thara why the Flamebird entity has manifested with her and spoken to her, but he has never felt the presence of the Nightwing.  In response, she gives him a crystal with the origin story of Nightwing and Flamebird.  It's all rather lovely, but especially fun if you imagine other characters in the roles of Nightwing, Flamebird, and their enemy Vohc-the-Builder.  I personally like to cast Bruce, Clark, and Lex in the three roles, but I think fun things can be done with other characters as well!

I admit I don't really see Superman as fitting well with an archetype of the creative destroyer, but some of the fun of a story casting him that way would be his discomfort with that role...

Now this, though...this is all, all Bruce:

"Thus the Nightwing's mission was the loneliest of Rao's children," that's perfect...

Oooh, the Phantom Zone was created to trap Nightwing in!

And then Chris and Thara have sex and OMG, noooo...  *winces and stops reading there*

OK, besides the creepiness of the current incarnations, there is so much that can be done with that mythology and with Nightwing being trapped in the Phantom Zone!  One of the best things about New Krypton is that we're getting things that can be built on and played with for our own wicked ends, muahaha...
