Now I can ask
Now I can say
The things I need to
You've gone away...

As she lays on her cot in the darkness, Kara feels it again, the moment when J'onn's mental voice vanished like smoke, a wisp curling away and gone in the high air. She doesn't want to remember him, but there's nothing else to do: the sound of celebration in the corridors cannot touch her, alone in the dark.

Before
Kara is eighteen years old, and a good, obedient daughter. On the outside. On the inside, she burns at the injustice around her. She has become an expert at hiding her thoughts, at veiling them in polite words. She has begun to think she will burn inside forever, a pillar of invisible flame, powerless.

And then one night there is a whisper in her room. You are not alone. She stares wildly before realizing that the voice is in her own mind, a strange dry warmth, like a sudden shaft of sunlight striking her head. Wait for me. Only that, nothing more. And yet the world is changed for her: she is not alone.

She waits, and remembers that voice, the reassurance of it, the comfort and strength. When she meets him at last she is already half in love with him. His eyes kindle with his smile at the sight of her and she puts out her hands and they meet halfway and they never needed to say anything about it at all.

Now
The memory of warmth fades and the room is silent and dark once more. She never told him how she felt. He never said a word. It was too dangerous to say out loud; surely fate would strike them down if they dared to hope for happiness.

And here she is, alone, stricken for her hubris. With her Kryptonian senses, she can hear celebration ringing through the mountain, ringing around the globe. All she wants is to be alone. Alone. Alone.

A flicker in her mind, the faintest of glimmers: You are not alone. Not a memory. She sits up on the cot in the darkness. "J'onn?"

Her whisper cannot be heard over the sounds of victory. And yet it is heard. Wait for me.

Warmth, a caress as fleeting as a desert breeze across her mind. Then silence.

In the darkness, Kara sleeps once more, the tiniest glow of hope like a banked ember in the back of her mind.

She is not alone.
