This was perfect, Mithen! A Bruce and Dick story! Yay! :)

You had Dick's feelings down when it came to his parents. Grief ties you up in knots because you don't want to forget, but thinking of the lost loved ones every minute holds you back. So it's a delicate balance and sometimes takes years to achieve.

He put a hand on Dick’s shoulder, turning him back to the shining new wood. “Look at it,” he said. “Every twenty years, they build it so it’s completely new. And yet it’s still the exact same building, the same one that’s been here for thousands of years. It never lets go of the past, but it’s always starting new. It can do both. And inside it, in its heart…” He tapped Dick’s chest, “Is a secret treasure that no one can see: the wisdom to bring back the sunlight.”

I love Bruce's speech. He understands, better than Dick realizes, of course, since no one in this AU knows the truth about Bruce yet except for Alfred. And bringing back the sunlight is our Dickie-bird! ;)

Nice description of life in Japan and the shrine itself. No one but the Royal Family has seen the mirror? Bet some non-royal took a peek in two thousand years. ;)

Happy happy birthday to you! Bruce being a good mentor to Dick always makes me terribly happy to write, and in this AU where Dick is only faintly aware of how much they have in common (I suspect he has a clue after this) it was wonderful to give them a moment of connection!
