Funny and devious! I'm sure John also thought that was a much better birthday than just sitting around the flat drinking beer and eating cake.

You know he did! :) The real present is getting to run around and complain and risk his life...Sherlock delivers gifts like those in spades. Glad you liked!

Finally, with an air of almost relief, Lestrade burst out: "Sherlock bloody Holmes!"

I feel Lestrade speaks for all of us. You've captured well the spirit of the show where everyone gets swept up into Hurricane Sherlock whether they'd like to be or not, and meanwhile he barely realizes or cares. Poor Molly. *hugs for her*

Oh Sherlock, he is nearly insufferable in this one, isn't he? I think birthdays probably bring out the worst in him--assortments of expected social behavior! And poor Molly...Molly's scenes have at times almost knocked me right out of being able to enjoy the show, I confess it! I die for her every time...

Oh that was lovely - devious John and inventive Sherlock!

And yes, I can quite see that all conversations would revolve around Sherlock, even at John's birthday party!

Thanks.

I was laughing with starsandsea about how Sherlock and John seem to collect people with nothing at all in common besides, well, Sherlock and John, and just imagining everyone trying desperately to talk about something else cracked me up too much to pass up.

Thank you for the comment!

(er, you refer to Mrs. Hudson as Mrs. Holmes once, which confused the heck out of me for a sec)

And you're a horrible person for getting me into Sherlock. I spent most of last night hoping they weren't going to do bad things to Irene Adler. :)

Oh ho, thank you so much for that typo catch! I confronted my beta in a righteous rage (not really) and he said sheepishly, "Um, I thought maybe she and Sherlock had gotten married?" NOT COOL, BETA.

I spent most of last night hoping they weren't going to do bad things to Irene Adler. :)

The moment in the conversation between Mycroft and John where Mycroft says "And so that's what we're going to tell him" made me gasp out loud and almost burst into tears. I am shocked at how this show sucked me in--but not the least bit abashed that I might have dragged others kicking and screaming along with me. Thank you for joining me in the madness!

Oh! This was so much fun to read!

I really loved how everyone had no idea what to talk about when they decided not to talk about Sherlock. He really makes for the most interesting topic of conversation, because everybody has something to complain about.

Also John seems to be happy to spend his birthday with Sherlock, even if that means getting into the middle of trouble. I'm sure he thinks of it as his real birthday present. :)

This story all sprang from a conversation with starsandsea about exactly that, how none of these wonderful dear interesting people have a thing in common besides Sherlock. I wanted to write that, and then of course the question "Why exactly ARE they so late?" kind of needed to be addressed... (Sherlock will do that to me, drag me along on a case when I have no interest in writing casefic!)

Yes, so much this! He'd really rather be out there outsmarting serial killers and rolling his eyes at Sherlock than eating cake anyway...
