This was simply delightful! I really laughed at all the culture clashes and the ensuing silliness.

And because of it the foreshadowing was even more heartbreaking.

"Some things are more beautiful for being brief," Bilbo said softly.

So true, Bilbo. So true.

I'm really loving writing the culture and psychology clashes--hobbit and dwarf societies are really so completely different and have such different priorities, it's fascinating!

And yes, geez, silliness that suddenly cuts sideways seems to be the way this fandom rolls for me. I really meant it to just be happy, but it would not stay there simply...

I wish these stories were around when I first read the Hobbit. I had a very difficult time with it, much more so than the Trilogy, but your explorations of the characters are making me want to to give it another go!

I think Hobbit is something of a challenge just because there is really no attempt at all to give any of the dwarves other than Thorin (and Balin, a little) an actual personality. They're just a mass of dwarves! And Thorin is awfully unlikeable, and Bilbo spends most of the book actively annoyed with the dwarves and wishing he was with the Elves. The movie has really hinted at some big shifts there--I just can't see Bilbo actively disliking the Company, even if he starts to fear Thorin is losing his mind...

OH GOD FLEETING MORTALITY FEELS. And dying at the mental image of all these MANLY DWARVES prancing around with flowers in their hair because of their burglar!

This story gave me total whiplash! Because yes, the genesis of the story was the image of all these gruff, macho dwarves tramping along with roses and marigolds in their hair because, well, it's a present from Baggins, so... And then of course I realized the flowers were going to wilt and Thorin was going to realize Bilbo was going to get old and die in like a third of the lifespan of a dwarf, and everything went sad like that. Silly bittersweet fandom...

I am so loving exploring the schisms between dwarf and hobbit culture! I think because they both have things in common with standard human culture, but such different things. On the plus side, they do unite in their love for food and drink, at least! :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed!
