Action Comics 13: Written by GRANT MORRISON and SHOLLY FISCH; Pencils by TRAVEL FOREMAN and BRAD WALKER
Action Comics 13 is set on Halloween ("the day when the veil between the seen and unseen is thinnest") and follows up at last on the tease that Krypto was lost in the Phantom Zone when Krypton blew up. We also get to see the Arctic Fortress of Solitude for the first time:
*squints* From one angle, it looks vaguely Elven. From another it looks like an ice-hedgehog. I am rather delighted with both possibilities.
Superman is dragged into the Phantom Zone by one of the criminals there, who then makes his way out and starts to plan to take over the world. But in the Zone, Superman finds the Phantom Stranger (doing his traditional job as the Phantom Exposition) as well as Krypto, waiting faithfully for him:
He's wearing goggles in that scene because they allow you to see in the Zone, but I wonder if he's deliberately drawn to look like Clark instead of Kal-El there, because he certainly does.
Superman reaches out with his will and seizes control of the "ecto-suit," leading to a wonderful Morrisonesque passage (I love when Morrison gets meta about Superman's powers):
Superman gets out of the Zone, but he can't bring Krypto with him, leading to maybe the Saddest Panel of All Time:
OH MAN I'M SO HAPPY. Krypto is back! Clark has his dog again!
And then the backup, by Fisch and Walker, shows the passage of years from Krypto's point of view:
It shows him trying to fight alongside Superman in all of his battles so far, leaping at enemies he can't touch, snarling at anyone who would hurt Kal-El. And then:
SOMETHING IN MY EYE OMG.
