Scans: Superman/Batman 81-82
Superman/Batman 81-82 ("Sorcerer Kings Part 1 & 2"): Written by CULLEN BUNN; Art by CHRISCROSS & MARC DEERING
Coming on the heels of Chris Roberson's fun two-issue story, we find Cullen Bunn having a different kind of fun: the magic-dystopian-time-travel sort of fun.
Also, Detective-Chimp-summing-up-Clark-and-Bruce's-relationship sort of fun:
The storyline starts with Shadowpact (the demon-fighting group Detective Chimp belongs to) confronting some demons when a mysterious figure in mystical armor charges through a gate:
The demons defeat the knight and he dies. When Shadowpact removes his helm they discover it's Superman!
Cut to Future!Batman brooding over the fact that Clark went off on a quixotic quest to try and keep this world from becoming a reality and chatting with his vampire-friend Nina:
Future!Batman comes back to the past and nabs our Superman, dragging him to the future.
At this point, Detective Chimp contacts our Batman and they set off to find out why some magicked-up future version of himself has kidnapped Superman.
In the future, Superman struggles to figure out what's going on:
So it appears to be a (not very distant) future in which magic has triumphed and transformed the world.
Back in the present, Batman tracks down a coven which appears to be involved in some sort of plan to alter the sun and bring about that future. Unfortunately, the coven is mostly a bunch of amateurs, and Batman delivers an awesome takedown:
Cut back to the future, where Clark finds himself in a world overrun by monsters ("grundies," to be specific). His powers are gone due to the strange sunlight, but he discovers he has the ability to, uh...well, turn undead (yes, he's a D&D cleric now), complete with massive glowing sword and all. Yum.
Also, Bruce still has his Batwing. But it's not a jet:
Yeahhhh, I'm hoping for some future shots of an armored Batman and Superman flying on a freaking dragon, I admit it. I HAVE NO SHAME.
