It's a beautiful sunny day here in Japan--I've never been more happy to hear trains rumbling along tracks and see airplane contrails in the sky. I live well south of Tokyo, but was visiting it by coincidence for sight-seeing with
arch_schatten , and we had to walk for four hours to get back to our hotel after the trains stopped. But the streets were crowded with phlegmatic, generally cheerful people who were happy to give us directions toward our hotel.
During the night we had a couple of bad shocks, and considering we are on the 32nd floor it was alarming! We ran to the stairwell where we found another shaken foreign couple...and no Japanese. We sat there until a guard came by and asked what the heck we were doing there. "It was an earthquake!" he said. "Uh huh," he nodded and rolled his eyes. "Everything is fine." So...we went back to our room and went to sleep and everything was fine!
