Over the last three weeks, I watched The Original Series.
You know. . .The Original Series
I used to watch the cartoon, and I have a memory of telling my father that I enjoyed the cartoon more than the live-action show because 'with cartoons you can do more stuff and it doesn't look fake.' I can't remember his reply at all. I always had an appreciation for Trek; when I was little and reading one of the many books about films and science fiction I came across the whole concept of 'Gene Roddenberry doesn't believe in monsters' thing. Basically you can't have a monster just be 'evil,' because the concept doesn't apply in nature and certainly wouldn't in space nature. If a silicon-based life form is melting your miners and stealing the parts to your equipment to hold up production, there might be a good reason for it. So I only just saw all the original series, and totally fell in love.
Having said that, I am very excited about the new Trek movie. . . I don't read Memory Alpha at all so I do not know what wars are being fought between the Trekkies and Trekkers over the casting of this film. I do hope the movie itself comes out all right; I'm optimistic it will be entertaining at least, and at best a success on par with TDK or Wrath of Khan. I will reserve judgement until I see it.
Except for one thing.
I still just don't get the Mccoy casting.
Country Fried Biscuits and Gravy
Just look at that smile! So warm and pleasant. . . certainly a firebrand when necessary, but only when pushed to his limit. And the man can throw down if necessary, which I noticed on the 'This Side of Paradise' episode. He laid down smack on the wacky cult leader with one hand--because the other hand was busy not spilling his mint julep during the delivery of said smack. That's right--the man got into a fistfight while holding a mint julep and did not spill a drop. Simple Country Doctor, indeed.
So I can see why they would want an action guy for McCoy, since they'll probably want to punch up the action for a modern audience.
Delicious Stud Muffin
I have every confidence the manbeef pictured above can play the part well, and do the character justice. I look forward to seeing how it plays out. But I will be honest and say that my interest in Karl Urban to this point has mostly hinged on my perceiving him as hot, and that most of my enjoyment of Pathfinder hinged on his conspicuous absence of pants. I know he can act, the rest is just gravy. But is it country-fried biscuits and gravy? Only time will tell.
I do have to wonder at the casting of John Cho, though. In all the world they couldn't find a gay Japanese man for Sulu? Really? Even just a hetero Japanese man would have been okay. . .I do love John Cho, but he's just not Japanese enough, what with being Korean and all. We'll just have to wait and see there, too!
