People can indeed find the poetic genius in whatever it is which truly speaks to them...and that yes, in today's society (which is far more free and lenient) religion is one aspect of life through which many people DO escape reality to find that other sense we are so certain they are looking for.
Why, though, do I suggest that Blake slams religion? And why does he do this?... because back in his times religion itself was a strict and unflinching regime which allowed for no free thought or exploration of any other concepts than those it so blindly and vehemently proposed. Therefore, although we can in hindsight see how religion can in fact be used TO AID what Blake was promoting, in his time religion was a symbol of everything preventing people from achieveing their poetic genius.
