in which I am uncharacteristically confused.

Hmmmm... I really want to make a Fringe FF archive with eFiction, but the particulars are mostly escaping me, except for coding skins, since that's just CSS, ergo, easy. But I'm not even recognizing file extension types, which feels... odd ( Read more... )

Hmm.. What I know from my experience with efiction is that you need to have/create a MySql database for your archive - this means you need to have a proper host on a server that can give you that feature. What did you mean by free host?

Yeah I've been reading up. It's all very complicated, but doable. It's the kind of thing that's easier to do with 2 people or more. The technical side of hosting appears to be pretty tedious, but it's worth it to me for the experience. I'm gonna snoop around until I can bug someone who's been a part of creating an archive before. *pokes momdaegmorgan*

Also, I'm googling like a madman, lol. My google-foo is strong. (I just noticed now that spell-check doesn't recognize 'google' as a word. Get with the times, people! XD)

LOL. Google is awesome!

Hey, if you want a host/space for it, I'd be happy to give that to you. I can create the MySQL db for you, give you an ftp access and all you need to do is install the efiction on your domain. Do you want a subdomain for your site or you prefer to purchase a full domain? I can create a subdomain for you under one of my domains, if you want. :)

Wow... that came out of left field.

...

So did that metaphor. I hate baseball.

Anyway, that sounds freaking awesome. I wanna inform myself more until I feel knowledgeable on the subject. But that sounds kinda awesome. I'm totally willing to pay fees and all that, so I'm thinking my own domain, for the sake of having a simple web address.

It's really awesome of you to offer this. I'm knee-deep in tabs with different hosting plans open for comparison right now. Who do you use?

:D Hey I love to help my flist if/when I can.

Now all you need to do is to buy the domain name, since I'll be providing the hosting. For domain names, I go to http://cheap-domainnames.com/ - just find a name, check if it's available. Then you purchase it without any hosting.. Once you've done that you just need to let me know what your domain name is and I'll create a hosting account for you on my server. :)

Mita, don't buy the hosting.. just get a domain name, ok? You'll get the hosting from me. :o)

*throws arms around you*

I kind of love you right now. :D

I have a week off (yay reading week) where I should be doing homework but I bet I'll be doing this and watching X-Files (going through Fringe withdrawal... figured I'd watch the predecessor).

Where was I going with that thought? No idea...

OH. Question. Or, asking your opinion, rather. I was thinking keep it simple with {fringefiction.com}, but I've read having 'fiction' in the title can lead to security problems? *eyeroll* Now that I type that out it sounds ridiculous.

My point was, I was thinking of maybe going with the taglines the show has accumulated: "Seek Answers", "Question the Answers" & "the Answer is the Question". Well, like the header I have right now (which I was planning on using for the site), I'm thinking {anwersarecoming.com} sounds pretty darn awesome (damn that word!).

What do you think?

LOL, you're too funny!

Yeah, using 'fiction' in a domain name might lead to some issues, but I'm pretty sure nothing that serious. Though, I think using something that 'symbolize' the show itself should work better for the site's name. I think {answersarecoming.com} does sound pretty wicked!

One thing that you want to think about is when you have your site up, you want people to be able to find it easy.. ie. what terms/words that people would use to google Fringe fictions mostly? that type of thing.

So, you decide what's best for it. I haven't really watched Fringe, therefore I can't really be much help for you with the naming. But you might want to have a discussion with other peeps in the fandom, maybe?

Yeah. I'm debating those points. {answersarecoming.com} is pretty cool sounding to me, but logically, more people would google {fringefiction.com}. It's a toss-up.

But yeah, I'm gonna consult, already asked the mod of the fringefiction comm here for permission to poll/discuss with the members. I'm just waiting for a response. But since it's 11pm here, it'll probably be a while.

But damnit, I want to start now! XD

Whereabouts are ya? Aussie? 'Cause the ACTUAL opposite end of the globe from me is some lonely town in New Zealand.

Heheeh I know the feeling. Sometimes when I come up with an idea I just want to do it right then and there. I hate waiting.

Yeah, I'm in western Aussie. It's 12:13pm on Sunday at the moment.

Anyways, you do what you have to do, I'm going to go get lunch ready now. Kids are hungry! *g* I'll be back in an hour or so and I'll check back then!

*HUGS* It's been awesome talking with ya, I'm happy that I could help with your fandom-obsessions *teehee* You'll be helping me with our Spuffy stuff when I'm all ready to work on that. :P

LOL It's not even Sunday yet here. XD It's so cool to think that you're enjoying a (possibly) beautiful sunny summer day, and I'm (sorta) enjoying a cold winter night. Very cool.

*squishes* Yes, I love making new LJ peepsies. :D

And hells ya. I'm so your man now. :P You can claim ownership over my soul. I'll not deny it, nor claim offense.

Go! Enjoy your lunch. I'm gonna go rustle up some snacks and a large glass of chocolate milk.

*squishes you back*

:D Had my lunch! It's a nice, warm sunny day here. It's been quite hot this week. Around 103-106°F (40-45°C) Really HOT, actually!

Are you still awake? :P I'm playing around making light textures. LOL. I know they're so lame, but they're so pretty! I can't stop playing with them *g*

Yeah I'm still awake. Barely. My neck is getting too sore to hold up anymore, so I have to take some migraine meds. I'll be out in a few, lol.

I've been working in flash to make a splash page for the archive. I love splash pages. :P

Uhg. My freaking neck... *weeps*

*dies*

Aww poor you. Don't wait too long or you're gonna be too sore later on.

Flash! I tried to learn it once, but I gave up! Just didn't have the time to really get into it, you know? But one day, maybe I'll get to it.. eventually. LOL

You have a good night!! Plenty of rest for your neck, k?

*hugs*

And WTF? This time I used "I'm thinking" way too much. I think my mind grabs hold of certain words/phrases and uses them till they're sad little kicked puppies on the side of the road. I remember my "man" phase. "Holy shit, man!" *facepalm*

Hole crap I use the word 'awesome' WAY too much. Change one of those to 'great', and another to 'brilliant'. *headdesk*
