musings and meditations:Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming... Damn, What a ride!!
memorabilia: I returned from New York City around midnight last night. All in all, it was a kind of whirlwind crazy trip. 3 days, 2 nights: from 4am on friday til mindnight on sunday. Aside from the two nights spent in the hotel sleeping from midnight til quater to eight the next morning, I was out running around NYC all day, pretty much non-stop. We were quickly disillusioned with the trasit system, and realized why the city has over 12 000 taxis. We walked most places, and took taxis when we were too tired to walk. We seemed to frequently end up in, or pass by Central Park.
activities of note:
- central park walking tour with history student/guide Tim.
- shopping / loosing things / finding things in Macy's
- SPAMALOT!, the Monty Python Broadway show
- MoMA, Museum of Modern Art (no not the Metro, that would have been nice though..)
- Times Square
- Giant Hersery's store in Times Square (sooo much chocolate!)
- Empire State building
- Boat tour around Manhattan
All in all, I quite liked the city. It was ridiculously overwhelming at first. I mean, the amount of people there is staggering. The buildings are endless. The traffic is crazy and it's so... loud. But I got used to it pretty quickly, my mom not so much. Once I accepted the crazy bustle, I got more of a sense of the history and culture of the place. It has a very specific kind of feel to it, which I haven't noticed in any of the other cities I've travelled to. It felt gritty and annonymous. London was huge, but it didn't swallow you up. New York seemed to both be swallowing, and seperating. It was unique. And for all the talk of New Yorkers being hard and angry, I didn't notice it at all. Every New Yorker I had contact with was very pleasent, from the guy who gave us direction in the subway system, to whoever it was that turned in my lost (and expensive!) article in Macy's.
I'd like to go back, and probably live there someday, at least for a time.
I can't put my photo's up quite yet, since I havent unpacked enough to located my transfer cable. But rest assured that I did take a lot of pictures, and i will put some of the good ones up.
