a quick thought

okay, so i hate 80s metal. most people accept this, but being a relatively new-found metalhead (as far as the heavy stuff is concerned, i'm really only 3 yrs in on this trend and it's paralelled my ascent [or perhaps decent] into emo/post-hardcore, which takes some of my attention too) this is somewhat of a faux-pas. for me to want to listen to house of pain over the Crue is unthinkable for many a metalhead, and i think it has a lot to do about the culture. for someone who has often connected on a more base level to a lot of the music i listen to, it doesn't always matter to me if i empathize with the music i listen to. if some thug lays down an awesome beat and his lyrics don't sound like he dropped out of middle school to sling crack for a living and he thinks that's commendable, i may listen to it and even enjoy it. i grew up listening to a lot of hip hop, indie, pop and RnB. 80s metal (hair-metal, i leave thrash/death metal out of this category) is about 3 things, drinking, fucking, and having a good time. sex drugs and rock'n'roll is (unfortunately) a life i've never lived, and so i don't give a shit if that's what the crue, poison, or any of the hordes of terrible bands that came out of that era talk about. i hate the riffs, i hate the vocals, and the lyrics mean nothing to me. "she's my cherry pie"????? wtf!!!

that's not to say i don't take a vested interest in lyrics. some of my favorite bands have very intense lyricists (aka counting crows) and some of my least favorite bands have probably the worst lyricists of the modern era (godsmack, 3 days grace, simple plan)

this brings me to something interesting that rivkah and i were discussing the other day. we were listening to that saliva song "always" on the radio, and i mentioned to her that i never liked them because i always thought they were fucking lame. my point and case to this arguement was the chorus to that song, "i love you, i hate you, i can't live without you." generally, rivkah usually agrees w/ me on this kind of thing (she hates godsmack almost as much as i) but instead, she offered conjecture. "well, haven't you ever felt like that before?"

"well, yeah. but there have been 100's of bands that have used that exact lyric to express that point."

"i suppose it could be worded differently, but i think that directness is what makes the song what work."

(this is actually a paraphrased conversation, fyi)

i suppose there's room for honestly, and room for saying something directly, but i dont' know, i think i'm still right. however it's something to consider when writing ladies and gentlemen, sometimes saying what you mean is better than constantly scripting in metaphor.

also, silverstein is an aweseome screamo band. check out "smashed into pieces" off the 'when broken is easily fixed' album. fscking awesome.

i don't really have much more to say. co-depencancy is when a person hates themself so much they have to rely on someone else to simply function in this world. but if you won't fight to save yourself, how do you expect to truly fight for another? if you won't push to better your life, can you really do better for anyone else?

it's time to grow up, my friends.
