The boy coughed, pulling away from the box for a moment, waving away dust particles before examining the contents of the box before him. His fingertips brushed away the dust that had collected on a few of the treasured possessions.

His eyes scanned through the things, though his mind was focused on his only task at the moment. He'd moved to an apartment- bringing only half of him- himself, the only part of him that could pull through. His other half was Jonghyun. Where was he? He was gone. No, he didn't abandon him. At least, that's what Key likes to think, except only for the fact that Jonghyun couldn't help it.

He was gone forever.

Well, perhaps he was in that other part of the world, where everything always had a happy side to it. One day, Key would join him. One day.
His hands suddenly felt clammy, his stomach not agreeing with his feelings, his heart hurting.

Why was this box so hard to get through? There were around.. twenty other boxes in front of him, but this one was different. This was the only part of Jonghyun he had now. He held onto the box tightly for a moment, before forcing himself to pull out a birthday card. His 20th. The one that had a puppy on the front, that made Key smile and hesitate for a moment before opening it, reading the familiar writing.

Key, Kibum, mine~
It's your 20th today. You know how much those two digits mean! You're everything, you're like the cake with the icing on top. Even sweeter than anything I've ever tasted. That works both ways, doesn't it? ㅋㅋㅋ This is the birthday where I'll treat you to anything you want. Because you're mine. I'm the locket and your the key. Except you're the key to my heart. I should tell you my favorite memory of you, shouldn't I? But guess what, every single moment with you is my favorite.
You know how beautiful you are, aren't you? You're the only person who can help me when I need to get my treatments, when I need someone to be there.
I love you.
Your puppy,
Jonghyun. ㅋㅋㅋ

Kibum glanced at it several moments, before wiping away the tears that quickly formed at his eyes, setting the card down aside andpulling out a photo of both of them. He remembered that. The sunshine, the clouds, the way they would simply just sit down and talk about nothing in particular. There was no explanation.

Then, he finally mustered up the courage to go through the box entirely, setting aside him and Jonghyun's favorite CD's, a photo album, a few trinkets, and then Kibum found it. He couldn't control it, the pain in his heart increased and he didn't bother to stop the tears that ran freely down his cheeks now.  His hands traced the simple chain, the small golden key that hung from it. This, was the end. The last part of him that Jonghyun had left behind. He remembered it so clearly.

"I knew you'd visit." The boy grinned, as he held Key's hand tightly, although still looking weak, sitting up in the hospital bed.
"Of course! I wouldn't miss an opportunity to see my puppy." Key replied, although his voice was choked with tears almost.
Jonghyun coughed quietly, and Key ran his fingers through Jonghyun's dark brown hair, looking at the boy's brown eyes, that never ceased to amaze him.
"I have something for you." Jonghyun murmured, reaching away from him and grabbing a box from the bedside table, before handing it to him. It already seemed to be special, at least in Kibum's eyes.
"Should I open it now?"
"There's no other time you'll see me again."
Kibum looked up. He knew that this would probably be his last visit, the last visit. His eyes already fogged up with tears, and he looked away from the part of him that lay on this bed, the part of his heart. He looked back at him, before prying open the box, his eyes fixed on the simple yet so impacting necklace. His hands touched it, his fingertips tracing the simple pattern and the beautiful key.
"It's beautiful."
"Just like you. Let me put it on you."
Key knew he couldn't manage, but he did. So he handed him the box, and leaned forward, as Jonghyun gently put the necklace on him.
"I'm tired, Kibum."
Key fingered the necklace, biting his lower lip as he looked at Jonghyun, taking in as much as he could of the boy that was before him.
"Go to sleep then, Jonghyun."
And so he did.
His eyes simply closed. He drifted off, and Key pressed a kiss upon his cheek, before leaving him silently.
That was the last time.

"You had to abandon me, didn't you, you stupid puppy." Key whispered, his tears falling, as he wiped them away with his fingertips.

And suddenly, he knew. He knew Jonghyun was here, probably right behind him, searching through the box with him, probably laughing at the good times and the bad. He could already feel him hugging around him, the familiar embrace Kibum longed for. He could almost hear his voice, his laughing, and he didn't how to feel. He was him, he was the part of him. He'd always be the part of his heart. forever.

join me, jonghyun.
