Taemin had never seen these before.
Sparks, colors, shapes, dancing across the sky in perfect formation.
Fireworks.
His eyes never left them, even when they were bright enough to blind him. His heart would beat in time with them- growing slower or faster. He sat alone- wishing in his mind that someone would be here to sit with him.
That's when he thought of Kibum.
Immediately, his hands would clench at the thought of him. Usually, his head would spin and his stomach would tighten, but the fireworks kept him conscious at the moment, to keep him awake enough to remember the old memories.
"Taemin, I need to tell you something."
"What?" The younger boy turned around, smiling.
"I've got a boyfriend. His name is Kim Jonghyun. Do you want to meet him? He's quite friendly." The other boy grinned, but Taemin had emotions. Enough to swallow him in a wave, and now it was drowning him. Choking him, with hurt, anger, and mixed feelings.
"No. I wouldn't."
"I don't." Taemin told himself in distaste, and was too absorbed in the past to notice someone come sit next to him. His heart skipped a beat when he saw- Kibum.
He has the nerve to come here, sitting next to me.
"Taemin." Key said softly, but Taemin looked the other way for a moment, before turning back and looking at him.
"What." He said bluntly.
"These are beautiful, aren't they?" If Kibum was hurt by the tone he used, he certainly didn't show it.
"No. I hate them." He didn't know why he was disagreeing with the older boy on purpose, he simply wanted to piss him off and let him leave. That was what his mind wanted, but his heart disagreed.
A pause.
"You used to always want to see these." Kibum commented.
"Used to. A past tense Kibum, in case you haven't noticed, we're in the present." Taemin was even surprised at his own harsh tone.
Key didn't speak, before Taemin noticed the tear streaming down his cheek.
"The past was a great place for me." Kibum quietly murmured. The fireworks continued on, illuminating Key's pale face, and the tears that continued to flow.
Taemin didn't know how to react, his heart filled with guilt but his mind happy at the same time.
"I broke up with him, Taemin."
"Oh." That was all he could force out.
"Sometimes the past doesn't even brush upon what I've learned. I've learned that I can't please everyone, and I've learned that I don't know everyone's feelings." Key's voice shook a bit with emotion, "And I know that you're upset Taemin."
The silence was like a slap to the cheek to Taemin. A cold reminder of how he didn't only hurt himself. The thoughts only pulled him in deeper, and he pulled out just in time to notice Key had gotten closer to him. His fingertips involuntarily brushing against his cheeks, wiping the tears away and leaving Kibum looking helpless- something Taemin had never seen before.
"You really are something else." Taemin commented quietly, and a flicker of interest passed through the older boy's eyes, before fading out quickly as it had come.
"I am."
And then Taemin finally noticed how soft those fingertips were, how beautiful Kibum's features were up close. The pale milky skin and warm breath, his own cheeks growing suspiciously warm as Kibum looked at him, not with hate, but with a kind of adoration that he hadn't seen from anyone. He saw everything in detail now- how his eyes explained everything he'd experienced- love or hate. His hair was a soft brown, and-
their lips touched.
No more time for detail, his heart pounded loudly, as Taemin realized how long he'd been waiting for this.
As his heart won over, so did his emotions- they cascaded over each other like fireworks.
