Rest In Peace, Henning Mankell

Oct 05, 2015 15:58

It's been over two years since I last posted to this journal, and I don't know how many - if any - will read this, but I had to write it.
Henning Mankell, one of my all time favorite authors, has died. The first adult novel I've ever read was a Henning Mankell book; I had to wait until I turned twelve, because my parents didn't want me to read anything by him before then.
So, when I turned twelve, I got Faceless Killers as a birthday gift, and I think I read it in a day. And then I read every other book by him we had, and the books that came out after that.

Henning Mankell is one of the reasons I love crime novels as much as I do. And now he's dead; he had cancer, and he died during the night.
I never got to meet him, never got to tell him what he meant to me. I never got to thank him, and now I never will.
There's also the fact that he had so many more books he wanted to write, and he never got the chance.
He wasn't 'just' a writer, he was a humanitarian too. The world has lost not just a fantastic author, but a genuinely good human being.

Rest in peace, Henning Mankell. I do hope I'm wrong and there's a life after this one, and that you found peace there.
