Jocasta asks that Oedipus tell her what is bothering him. He ends up telling her and in that he mentions the prophecies of the oracle. Jocasta soon tells him of a story proving that their prophecies are incorrect. The story had to do with Laius’ son killing him, but it turns out that he was killed at a place where three roads meet by some robbers. Oedipus asks many questions about Laius and soon fears that he was the man that killed him. This means that if the oracles were correct, Oedipus would have to have been Laius’ son. This matters because this also depends on the future of many. I predict that Oedipus will learn more from the shepherd man who witnessed the killing that Jocasta has sent for.
Oedipus tells Jocasta of his story, the whole truth of everything he is able to recall. He too when he was little was told by Apollo that he would lie with his mother and murder his own father. He soon fled and came upon some travelers who got him mad and he killed all of them, but one was able to escape. Jocasta comes with the shepherd. This means that Oedipus along with everyone else is about to find out the truth of all of this. This matters because this chooses whether Oedipus can remain king or not. I predict that the servant will have the same story as Oedipus being that he was there.
In this time, a messenger comes to Jocasta seeking to find Oedipus for he had good news for him. He and Jocasta soon find Oedipus and the news was that king of Corinth, Polybus father of Oedipus, is dead. Oedipus and Jocasta rejoice of the news. They now believe that the oracles are wrong and worthless, but little do they know what was to come next. Oedipus continues to chat with the messenger. The people of Corinth want Oedipus to return to become their king. Oedipus now fears the oracles again because they once told him that he would lie with his mother. The messenger hears this and begins to tell Oedipus that Polybus was not Oedipus’ real father, but rather a gift. This means that the oracles still have a good chance of being right. This now matters because Oedipus will have to flee from Thebes if the prophecies about him were correct. I predict that the prophecies are right.
Oedipus learns more from this messenger. A shepherd gave Oedipus away to the messenger and he gave the baby to king Polybus. Jocasta is getting extremely worried of the looks of what is about to be revealed. She comes and Oedipus is ready to ask him questions but first he wants to know if his mother was a slave. This means that Oedipus could have very well been Laius’ son and that he is guilty of killing his own father and lying with his own mother. This mattes because it means that the oracles were right. I predict that the shepherd will reveal all the missing information.
The shepherd has revealed all of the missing links to this mystery. Oedipus was given to the shepherd by king Laius and Jocasta because it had been said by the oracles that the baby would grow up only to kill his father and lie with his mother. The shepherd then gave the baby to the messenger who then gave him to the king Polybus who took the baby and raised him. Soon a second messenger comes and tells of Jocasta’s death. This means that Oedipus has to leave or be killed in order for the plague to leave Thebes and the citizens. This matters because now Jocasta is dead from all of this madness and Oedipus has yet to find out now. I predict that Oedipus will soon leave Thebes for good.
The second messenger soon tells everyone how Jocasta died and what happened afterwards. She ran into her room calling out Laius’ name while pulling her hair out at the same time. She hung herself and Oedipus soon came in to find her hanging. He cut the rope and grabbed the pins from her robe and stabs himself in the eyeballs continuously. After all of this happens, Oedipus tells of his pain and also says that the god Apollo made him do the damage to himself. Now Oedipus wishes death over life. This all means that Oedipus was born into a cursed life. This matters because the mystery is now solved and the oracles were correct. I predict that Oedipus will kill himself.
