31 March 2005 Oedipus The King In this section of the story, Oedipus is telling his suffering people that he is suffering far more than they are. There is a plague in the city and Oedipus has sent out his brother-in-law Creon to the god Apollo to see what can stop the plague. Creon comes back saying that the man who killed the former king Laius must be killed. Apollo has said this to Creon and Creon is very hesitant towards telling king Oedipus the truth. This means that Creon has to tell Oedipus who the killer of Laius is. This matters because this determines whether or not if the plague will leave the city of Thebes. I predict that Creon will tell Oedipus who the killer is. Creon has now told Oedipus that the killing did not take place in the city of Thebes and it also happened long ago, before Oedipus was their king. However, the chorus says that bad things are to come throughout the yeas. This is all being said clear from Creon. This means that Oedipus desperately wants to know who the killer is so that person could be murdered. This all matters because once again, it is extremely important for Oedipus to save and take care of his people from the plague. I predict that Oedipus will kill the murderer of Laius. Oedipus is now speaking out to his people and telling them that if they know anything about the murder of Laius to come forward and tell or if anyone is the killer to also come forward and they will be banished and not killed. He also says if anyone does know anything but does not say a word of what they know, he will basically shut them out. Oedipus soon calls for the blind prophet Teiresias who tells Oedipus that it would be best to stop this and for both of them to return home. Oedipus gets mad. This is all being said from Oedipus and Teiresias. This means that if someone tells the truth, it would bring terrible things to the city. This matters a lot because now it is a big deal to find out who the killer is and no one will say whom. I predict that the truth will come out. Oedipus has made Teiresias very angry and that forced him to tell the truth: Oedipus is the killer of Laius. Oedipus does not believe it and accuses Teiresias of setting this plot up against him so he can have all the power and the throne. Oedipus tells him to leave his house. This is being said by the words of Oedipus and Teiresias. The meaning of this is clear; Oedipus killed Laius and does not want to believe at all. This matters because now Oedipus must leave to stay true to his words. I predict that Oedipus will keep fighting to defend himself, but more terrible things are to come. In this section, the reader is given a lot of important information. A foreshadowing of what is to be said. Creon comes back to speak with Oedipus and to defend himself from anything bad and wrong that Oedipus has aid and accused him of. The meaning of this all is not too clear, but pretty much said by Teiresias that Oedipus is a father and brother both to his children. This is a big deal for Oedipus because I predict that he is about to find out a lot more of his life. Oedipus and Creon now have a quarrel and Creon tells him that he has no desire what so ever to try and steel the crown from Oedipus, for he is happy and in peace as he is now. Jocasta soon comes out and tells Oedipus to trust him as well as the chorus. Oedipus listens but tells them that they are only wishing him to banishing or his death. This means that Oedipus is believing all of this information more and more as time goes on and as he talks to Creon. This matters because everyone’s future depends on the choices Oedipus makes from now on. I predict that Oedipus will be banished from Thebes.
