Setting sun painted the sky with different shades of orange and red. People were hurrying to their homes, eager to see their families and eat some decent food they had missed because of their work. Yellow and red leaves covered the pavement, once in a while being sent flying by the sweeping wind. The air was chilly and froze lungs as someone breathed it in too deeply. All in all, autumn had really struck now.

In a big, two storey house the two ladies of the Hughes’s household were getting ready for bed.  Gracia sat on the couch, clad in her red night gown. In her lap she held her two and a half year old daughter. The child had on her white pajamas which were decorated by sunflowers and stars.

The woman brushed Elysia’s hair with a purple comb, making sure she got every knot open. Her left hand softly caressed the strands over which the comb had moved a moment ago.

“Now,” she said softly while still going on with her task, “we’ll go and brush our teeth. Then I’ll read you a bedtime story.”

“Can’t Daddy tell me one?” The girl looked at her mother with her big, green eyes. Gracia felt her heart sunk by the disappointed tone on her daughter’s voice.
