Below in the LJ cut is the entry I mentioned. The Prompt was Transient Beauty. I hope you all like it
Ilusion Of Youth
By Mistress Safire
She sat before her mirror, the small makeup pots, tubes and jars lined up like soldiers on a child’s play
table. A wry smile crossed her lips as she picked up the crème that would smooth the wrinkles of age away for the day.
The maturing woman wondered when had she gotten so vain, so desperate to hide the fact that time was moving forward and the sweet blush of youth was quickly stepping behind it. The innocence of youth had been a transient beauty giving way to the full bloom of womanhood, so why was she trying to hide it with crèmes, powders and chemicals that promised to return or hide what her body naturally walked towards.
Her hand stopped just shy of opening another jar. Why did she keep doing this too herself? Her skin felt like it couldn’t breathe when all the so called beauty treatments were all “spackled” as she called it, on.
When she was younger it had been to enhance what she had and now it had become habit, a clutching at straws to keep the dewy cheeks and line free eyes of her younger years.
Her husband just shook his head whenever she brought home a new jar of some supposedly “Youth Re-newing Lotion” or such.
She ran her hands over bright auburn waves; waves she knew should have a sprinkling of grey within them. What had happened to her boasts that she would eschew the popular fashion of coloring her hair to hide the steel colored strands she had rightfully earned?
The woman reach out a hand, grabbed some tissues and began to rub away the crèmes, powders and lotions. Enough was enough. She had a right to show these wrinkles. She had earned them by raising a family, having a career, loving a husband and a myriad of other wonderful and not so wonderful things life had given her. These were her badges, her medals that she had made it through life and had taken everything it had thrown at her.
She grabbed the small wastebasket by her dressing table and swept the soldiers of beauty away into it to join the tissues she thrown in moments before.
No more. She quickly reached out and applied a small amount of lipstick, eyeliner and mascara and quickly added a small amount of a smokey green to her lids, adding to her natural green eye color. A smile flashed brilliantly across her mouth. This was who she was and the mask of a painted on youth was finally retired.
Her eyes slid sideways as her husband walked into the room and for a moment the flutters of nervousness washed through her. What would he say? Would he like this new person?
With a slight tremble of fingers she watched as puzzlement invaded his face, a face that had its own lines, his badges of living life. He looked into her face as understanding woke behind his eyes.
He bent and passionately kissed her. “You look beautiful, my love.”
Fluttering gone and smile beaming for him, she knew what he spoke was truth for she could see her own true beauty lay in his eyes.
Oh boy I am really nervous about this. I just joined today. This is the first time I have written anything outside of fan fiction. I hope you all like it.
