have just packed my suitcase, y'know, 'just in case'...
the first time we got evacuated i was 9 years old. i don't remember much of it, just mum packing me, a bowl of grapes and my porcelain dolls into the back seat of the car and us driving to the memorial hall at woy woy where they were keeping everyone. its funny, i remember mcdonalds and pizza hut and all the other fast food places delivering all this free food and me being so excited, without a thought in the world as to the fact that our house could be burning down.
we've had two other near misses in the time since, a couple of fire bugs in our backyard while we were in Queensland, the fire got to the tree on the rock beside our house; then stopped.
and when i was about 11 they were burning off in our bush. scary enough was going to sleep being able to see little pockets of fires in the bush outside my window but one day they left them unattended and one got out of control.. this time it got to the trampoline next our laundry. little burnt out holes all over the trampoline, the perfect size for a big toe to get stuck in and wham! the unsuspecting child is face down on the black material.
but nothing in the last few years.. nothing when i've been actually old enough to be aware that there is a fire 15 kilometres away that is potentially a serious threat to this house i've lived in for the last 18 and a half years.
scary thought huh?
