Characters of Diversity, Fanfic, Mine meme. Stolen from
theemdash.
Methods and Materials
All fics in
memories and at my sadly neglected
website. I still like that layout. Many of my drabbles are not memoried, or are in meme posts that I haven't bothered with, but I'm just doing tihs for fun, so what the hell.
This means there are...fifteen archived at the website (I wrote more DBZ than I'd remembered, and I can't remember where I put the bonobos story), and about 70 at the journal, to make...85. My.
Measurements: Using pov character(s) or main character of focus, count stories with one or multi povs, and classify the race, gender, and other attributes of the pov character.
Considerations/definitions:
Ripping off
theemdash's definitions for the most part.
Non-white is Black, Hispanic, Asian, Arab, American Indian, Hawaiian, African, or Space Aliens played by an actor of one of these classifications. Original language was now " and just about anything not European. Does not include Jews, Gypsies, Irish, Catholics, Welsh, Slavs, Texans, Blue-Eyed People or other people Just Not Brown Enough." Considering I write Tatakori Mamoru more than almost anyone, I bristle at the blue-eyed definition. I actually think I should run this twice, once for Western perspective and once with Majority Culture vs. non-Majority Culture. But then I wonder how I would define youkai and my head starts hurting. (I guess they'd be the minority, though, right?) I also wonder what would happen if someone like
daegaer ran this meme with the given language, as she often writes historical pieces that demonstrate how much the definition of 'white/non-European' has changed over the years. Anyway. Jews, Gypsies, etc. would be considered non-white for the purposes of this survey if their non-whiteness was a plot point. I don't believe that's a factor in any of my stories, I'm just putting off doing the actual counting at this point.
Some totals may not add up. Heh.
Old is a character who looks, acts, or is treated as though they are past their prime. (Why don't I write any Iroh fic? HMM.) For the record, Nii does not count as old.
Gay or bi is canonically gay or bi; subtext is irrelevant for the purposes of this census. (I'm just rolling with this.)
For the sake of having some distinctions, half-white characters are considered non-white (just like the KKK!), and the Turtles-- with an alien appearance and Japanese father, but white voices-- are also considered non-white. (I didn't realize I'd be doing so much implicit criticism of this meme when I started doing this, I swear!) I will pull things out of my ass and define Crawford and the vast majority of the Trigun cast as white, even though I often define Crawford as part of all Native American and really have no clue on Wolfwood or Meryl. And only Bulma's family in DBZ counts as 'white,' due to poorly-remembered fanon.
Census
Total Stories: 85(ish)
Total Stories of over 500 words:
Significantly fewer-- 39. That's counting linked drabble sets as stories over 500 (when they qualified).
Stories with only 1 POV: 71
Stories with multiple POVs: 14
Stories with only 1 pov, Minor Character: What defines a minor character, I wonder? I'll take 'non leads' for $100, Alex, which would make 2. Maybe 3 if you count Witch Hunter Robin, but that's such an ensemble show it's hard to say.
Stories with only 1 pov, Original Character: 0
Stories with White Male POV only (I love how I can skip entire categories of my fic this way: 27, though I often had to catch myself figuring out whose POV was there in the WK stories.
Stories with White Female POV only: 1. That was easy!
Stories with Non-White Male POV only: 44
Stories with Non-White Female POV only: 2
Stories with Old People POV only: 1
Stories with Canon or OC Gay/Bi Character POV only: 2, bless you FAKE.
Stories with Multiple povs, more than one gender: 5
Stories with Multiple povs, including non-white characters: 13
Stories with Mix-Race Relationships, where relationships are distinctly romantic: Not counting Saiyuki: 9. Saiyuki brings it up to 27. Edit: It's 28 if I add Sanzo/Goku.
Stories with Non-White, Old, or Gay/Bi Characters in speaking roles: I had to total up the nots and subtract. 73, I think.
I'm not sure how useful it is overall, especially for an animanga writer, but it was interesting.
