Clearly staged in advance; you guys coordinated your headgear and everything. ;)

I love the row of grinning skulls next to the cosmetics aisle, of all places.

It wasn't! I wear bandanas all the time. Pigtails too. Because, y'know, half of me is ten and the other half got her fashion tips from the local army-navy surplus.

It's all for the Gasparilla festival, in which Tampa celebrates being invaded by a pirate who never actually existed.

Bandannas and pigtails are both excellent! I am just unable to turn off the snarkasm, ever.

Imaginary pirate festival! Amazing. I am never going to grow up.

Yeah, hit up Google for Gasparilla. Jose Gaspar = never existed.

Sadly, it's more of a "Let's get drunk and act like morons" festival - the parades anyway. They want it to be Mardi Gras. So I don't go. But I enjoy the fact that it exists, you know?

Heh, yeah - noodled around on the festival's website for a bit, and found this gem: Crews of captured ships were given the option of joining Gaspar's ranks or walking the plank; fates of captive ladies were determined largely by his moment's fancy. Pirate history for frat boys! The idea is nifty, though.

There's a Mermaid Parade in Coney Island you would love - anyone can enter their group of friends to march along, and people come up with the most amazing homemade costumes and themes about mermaids. I have a boatload of pictures on Farcebook from last year; it was my first date with the dude, so I have fond memories. Sadly, with controversy over the development along the Boardwalk, the parade may not continue much longer.
