Just wanted to provide an update for anyone interested.
Aaron and I do live in Cedar Rapids, IA which is currently making national news because of the flooding. The pictures of my beautiful city are devastating to me but there is a silver lining to this cloud and I believe that Cedar Rapids will rise again from these ashes.
Aaron and I are safe. Our neighborhood is far from the flooding and the biggest concern we have in the water coming down (and three more days of rain predicted) because or neighborhood has notoriously bad drainage. Right now, our house is unaffected and we are reaching out to our neighbors.
My work is also far upstream and I spent most of yesterday working on contingency plans and feeding people. I have a couple of co-workers who live in the area right by the river which is currently completely underwater. They are fine and managed to get most of their belongings out. Aaron's work is downtown and was thought to be outside of the flood area. However, we now believe that his building will have at least a foot of water in it and he may be facing loss of property and work stuff. We will not know where that stands until the waters recede.
Cell service is spotty. Water is scarce and needs to be conserved. Otherwise, I am waiting to see how everything looks when the waters go away. We will be helping to dig out downtown when that time comes. Many of the landmarks that pretty much don't mean much to people outside of this area (the Czech/Slovak museum, the Library and Science Station, TCR, the Paramount, the Museum of Art, the Cherry building, May's Island) are important places of both my childhood and adulthood. The flooding of these areas hurt me to the core. However, I am also very proud of my home and how we have come together as a community to help each other and protect our home.
Blessed Be and thank you for your thoughts.
