(Scene 100: The Vic - Spencer is busy
with his posters, re-arranging them when Jake knocks and enters the bedroom).
Jake: What are you doing?
Spencer: Just making Delta looking good again.
Jake: I was thinking, Kelly looks a bit like Delta Goodrem don’t you think?
Spencer: Never thought so myself, but there you go. I suppose she’s got long blonde hair, sort of like Delta Goodrem - but nowhere near as classy. Do me a favour Jake?
Jake: What?
Spencer: Go and keep an eye on Alfie and Nana and Kat downstairs.
Jake: Why?
Spencer: I’ve got some reporters coming up here soon…they want to watch Arthur’s bench being removed.
Jake: You what?
Spencer: I’ll give you some of the money they pay me if you do. Now that it’s gotten quiet with the murders again, perhaps there’ll be no more…they’ve decided that the bench should be removed. I’ve no doubt they want to conduct further forensics on it…but they won’t find anything now. It’s going to break Pauline’s heart, but that can’t be helped can it?
Jake: Yeah of course I’ll help out. But don’t forget my cut will you?
(He goes downstairs and joins the rest of the punters. To his delight Kelly is there and he goes up to her, he keeps his word to Spencer though, which is difficult, as he has eyes only for Kelly; but he needs to leap into action if he wants a share of the dough that Spencer’s about to earn in just allowing photographers and reporters a view from the bedroom window whilst the bench is being removed).
Grant: Jake, thought I’d find you here.
(Jake looks up, he hadn’t noticed Grant approaching them).
Grant: You still want the job yeah?
Jake: Yeah of course I do.
Grant: The police have given the okay that refurbishment works can start and I want you to start clearing out the cellar. Start tomorrow morning? Sevenish?
Jake: Hell that’s early!
Grant: The earlier you start the earlier you finish and can spend some time with your girlfriend.
Jake: Yes all right, Grant.
Grant: Good lad.
(Alone again Jake checks that no one has sneaked upstairs, satisfied he sits back down besides Kelly and begins snogging her).
Jake: Early bedtime for me then, Kel.
Kelly: I’m all for that, darling!
(They laugh mischievously and don’t notice Spencer eyeing them as he comes down the stairs and looks in on them and everyone else drinking and making merry at this lunch hour in The Vic. Alfie and Kat are both busy serving and Nana is sitting with Pat and is knitting! Spencer opens the back door and leads ten photographers and reporters upstairs, rubbing his hands gleefully. Stupid Jake has no way of knowing how much money he’ll be paid for doing this, and he certainly has no intention of revealing the whole amount that he’s earned to his friend!)
(Scene 101: The Vic - Alfie and Gem N are in bed together. They’ve spent so many pleasant nights together since Gem’s arrival into The Square that Gem has told the Truemans to vacate her room at the B & B. She and Alfie are acknowledged as an item now by everybody, including Kat Slater, and there’s rumours of an impending engagement. The latter is just wild speculation though as Gem N is still working hard on the case. As much as she would like she can’t call things off now. The B & B made her feel uncomfortable, the presence of Grant and Joe greatly perturbs her and Paul Trueman tries desperately to conceal the grief he feels for his lover, Janine, that it’s too painful for her to bear.
Nana Moon’s dementia is experiencing one of it’s more stable periods and after the demise of Roxy, Gem N’s psychic energies seem to have shut down. Until tonight that is, she spends all night tossing and turning feverishly in bed and murmuring in her sleep; Alfie usually exhausted after a night of passion wakes up to the sound of her sobbing in her sleep.
In her sleep, Gem sees water…lots of water…rocks…stones….a rotten torso of a woman with the familiar cut from groin to chest….a mobile phone lying on the grass…she sees a name on the screen of the mobile phone….Nina Harris!)
Gem N: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagghhhhhhhhhhhh
Alfie: Gem! Gem! Wake up!
(Alfie leaps out of bed and snaps the light on and shakes Gem N to arouse her from her delirious sleep).
Spencer: Alfie? What’s up? What are you and her doing in there? You’ve woken me up………..
(Now that Jake and Kelly are courting, Jake seldom spends a night at The Vic).
Alfie: It’s all right, Spencer. Go back to bed. Gem’s just had a nightmare.
(Gem N looks up at him drowsily).
Gem N: I’ve got to phone Marsden. The canal…something is in the canal. They have to drag the canal. Not something, someone…what was someone! I saw the name in my vision, Nina Harris….she worked here I think….oh my God, Alfie! He’s struck again!
(Scene 102 - Walford GeneralHospital - Mortuary - Dennis looks at the pathologist and his assistants in disbelief).
Dennis: You’ve never had reason to question my work before.
Pathologist: I’m questioning your work or your abilities. But I have to abide by what DCI Marsden has expressed. You’re not to attend any more of the post-mortems of these murdered victims. Take your lunch early. Come back about three…a nice long lunch for you. When you come back, you can help prepare two bodies for release.
(Dennis reluctantly leaves the mortuary but satisfies himself by a sneaky look at the gruesome torso. The head, legs and arms have still to be found. For some reason, rumour has it, that Marsden is confident about the discovery of these. He heads for the canteen where he sees Saul and Sonia enjoying an early lunch also).
Saul: Hi. Everything all right?
Dennis: They’ve got another one down there.
Saul: Another one? I take it you mean a murdered person.
(Medical students and nurses and porters who are also there overhear the conversation and gather around, naturally struck by morbid curiosity. Sonia is getting used to the morbid topics of conversation now, but still she feels queasy when Dennis describes what he’s seen).
Dennis: A dark skinned woman. By the look of what’s left of her, I can imagine she was quite a looker…lovely waist…good boobs…
Sonia: Do you mind?
(A sinister smile sweeps along Saul’s face).
Dennis: I know that smile! What are you thinking?
Saul: Thinking about a group of us going down the mortuary tonight to have a look for ourselves.
Dennis: It’s locked up in the night you know. The porters never let anyone through.
Saul: Ah come on, Dennis! Don’t give me that! You work there, you got keys yeah?
Dennis: I don’t know, Saul. It’s our jobs on the line if we’re caught remember. And you’ve got the post of Charge Nurse now yeah?
Saul: Yeah. But I certainly don’t intend getting caught. Anybody want to have a look at the torso?
(It seems most do. Sonia gets up, tray in her hand).
Sonia: You disgust me, Saul. Why don’t you have some respect for the dead? Why do you want to go gawking at such a gruesome thing?
Saul: Oh come on, Sonn. Loosen up, babe. It’s just harmless fun. The torso’s not going to mind us having a look.
(Sonia angrily leaves the group to it and go back to duty early).
Dennis: What’s up with her?
Saul: I think she’s got a bit of a guilt trip concerning us.
Dennis: Jamie know anything yet?
Saul: Nah, Jamie’s too dumb to think his beloved Sonia would sleep with another bloke. In any case, Jay, I hear is still having problems with his stomach.
Dennis: They haven’t sorted him out yet?
Saul: I reckon it’s psychosomatic - a good shrink that kid needs.
(Dennis and Saul laugh and begin planning their escapade for the night).
