Dedicated to: AnnMarie and Donna (who always read and reply!).
(Scene Forty-four: 25 Albert Square. Grant lets himself into the house as he asked Sonia for the keys saying he wished to check up on Jamie, since his flu sounded so bad and he doesn’t want to be hanging around knocking the door if Jamie’s in bed sleeping. He enters the bedroom and Jamie stirs).
Jamie: Grant? What are you doing here? How did you get in?
Grant: Sonia gave me the keys. How are you?
Jamie: Rotten.
Grant: Yeah, well next time try the flu jab. You’ve got nothing to lose.
Jamie: Robbie tried it a couple of years ago and he was as rough as hell after it.
Grant: Well nothing new there then!
(Jamie scrambles to sit up and drinks the water on the bedside cabinet. He looks at Grant curiously. He senses Grant has arrived for a purpose).
Jamie: What is it?
Grant: I hear mum let you have some stuff that belonged to me. I want it back, Jay.
(Jamie sighs).
Jamie: I didn’t think you’d mind. You hadn’t bothered with them for so long.
Grant: But I’m back now, Jay. You can have a lend of them another time. But I must have my ripper collection back now.
Jamie: What all of it? Grant I haven’t finished with them yet!
(Grant grabs hold of Jamie and drags the protesting boy out of the bed).
Jamie: Grant! I’m naked for God’s sake!
(He grabs hold of a sheet and wraps it around himself for modesty’s sake).
Grant: Show me where you’ve got them, Jay. Then you can go back to bed.
(Jamie staggers to one of the wardrobes and as soon as he opens the door Grant pounces upon the contents therein. Shoving clothes and shoes out of the way in the process. He’s like a man possessed. Jamie shakes his head in bewilderment and crawls back into bed. He lies there drowsily as Grant rummages through the wardrobe and has to make two journeys back to the room to retrieve his collection. Finally holding the last stack of books he turns to Jamie).
Grant: Right. I’ll leave you to rest now. I’ll show myself out. Sorry I disturbed you. I’ll see you when you’re better.
Jamie: Yeah, sure, okay, Grant. Bye.
(As Grant closes the door and Jamie closes his eyes he suddenly remembers the items of the ripper he has under his pillow and under the bed. Three books, “The Encyclopaedia of Jack the Ripper,” “Jack the Ripper the Final Solution,” “The Ripper Diaries” all belonging to Grant and various other new editions that Jamie has since purchased as well as a range of new DVDs which include “From Hell.” Jamie calls Grant at the top of his voice to come back for the three books that belong to him. But Grant is already out of the house and his collection of the ripper so extensive that he doesn’t realise that he’s missing three books).
Jamie Suspect 11 - Likes reading about Jack the Ripper. He was scratched by a cat. Is this owing to the fact that he was trying to kill it at the time. Jamie has been rather withdrawn throughout this story so far. He kept vigilance from his bedroom window when Janine was discovered so possibly saw quite a lot which was going on. Jamie lost his virginity to Janine and was treated very badly by her. Sonia believes that Jamie hasn’t been the same since he was beaten by Phil and has become moody and works much longer hours in The Arches now. Was the violent vomiting Dot and Jim heard when they came home from bingo owing to his bad bout of flu or was it something more sinister? Jamie is a heartthrob and attracts the women easily. He’s also slept with Zoë, and Kelly is also making eyes at him which he’s well aware of. He adores his wife Sonia of course, and loves Peggy Mitchell. We’re as yet unaware of how he feels about Sharon.
(Summing up the List of Suspects)
Ian Beale - Perhaps Walford’s biggest loser and wimp. Paid Janine for sex.
Barry Evans - Janine was his fiancée. Does not like organ donation.
Martin Fowler - Petty criminal, spoilt mother’s boy. Slept with Kelly.
Dan Ferreira - A dictator to his family. Concerned about his children’s relationships with certain women of ill repute.
Grant Mitchell - His violence towards women already legendary.
Jamie Mitchell - Slept with Janine. Shares Grant’s interest in the ripper.
Spencer Moon - Was once treated as a joke. Now likes gutting fish in the market stall.
Saul Sebastian - Senior male nurse at Walford General, new to the area.
Paul Trueman - Conman. Was having an affair with Janine.
Dennis Rickman - Has a dodgy past. Mortician. Already the killer of Jack Dalton.
Joe Wicks - Paranoid schizophrenic, thinks everyone the devil. Likes dead cats.
(Scene Forty-five: 10th September - Albert Square. Frank Butcher accompanied by Pat, watches as Ricky and Diane place a wreath at the railings surrounding the gardens. Theirs is just one of many floral tributes, although Janine wasn’t very popular whilst alive, her death has hit the residents hard. The gardens are still cordoned off and the forensic teams are still going through the area with a fine toothcomb. Unbeknown to them the killer is watching what is going on).
Zoe: Reminds me of the Princess Diana floral tributes.
Martin: Only you could possibly compare this to the Diana tragedy.
Kelly: Well it’s more of a tragedy when you think about it because we actually knew Janine.
Spencer: Yeah well don’t get too hypocritical about it, is it? Half of us couldn’t stand her.
Sasha: I didn’t know her very well, but she seemed okay. I feel so sorry for her dad and brother and sister. What they must be going through!
(The killer secretly smirks at the atmosphere he has created in The Square).
Zoe: I wonder how he’s feeling?
(She indicates Paul who’s also placing a spray of flowers by the fence).
Kelly: He’s going through hell I should imagine. After all, he still doesn’t realise that his carrying on with Janine is common knowledge throughout The Square.
Sasha: God, look at Barry! I swear he looks as if he’s lost about a stone in the last day!
(Barry looks dreadful as he goes up to Frank and the two men embrace, united in grief. It’s difficult to say who looks worse).
Dan: Come on let’s set up stall.
Kareena: I’ve got flowers for Janine first.
(Dan scowls as Kareena places her floral tribute with the others).
Saul: This place is alive this morning!
Dennis: It is. Looks like the world and its mother have come out to pay their respects to Janine.
Saul: Really well loved was she?
Dennis: Depends on how you look at it. Sexually she was always active, but whether she was loved as if affectionately I doubt. I think even her father almost disowned her once.
(Saul laughs dryly).
Saul: What total hypocrisy then.
(Sharon joins them outside the flat with Vicki).
Dennis: What are you up to today, Sharon?
Sharon: Going to check the accounts and see Grant. Setting the wheels in motion to hand over all the business to him.
(Sonia arrives on the scene with Dot and Jim. Sonia places flowers upon the railings. The fencing is covered now with fragrant floral tributes and cuddly toys and cards. Sonia’s heart lurches and as she turns she sees Jamie standing by the window watching).
Jim: He was sick again last night, Sonia.
Sonia: Yeah I know. I was up half the night with him.
Dot: He should have the doctor.
Sonia: It’s just the flu.
Jim: Is it normal to be sick with the flu?
(Sonia shrugs. Her attention is drawn to The Vicarage where Phil, Kate and Peggy are coming out of the house. Grant and Joe join them. Grant looks in the direction of the gardens).
Peggy: It’s wonderful to see this sort of community spirit uniting in tragedy.
Grant: It’s hardly a tragedy Janine being dead, mum. She’s no loss to the community.
Kate: That’s not very nice and totally disrespectful.
Joe: Would you rather him be hypocritical?
(An argument ensues between the Mitchells).
Martin: Isn’t that just typical of them? They have to be the centre of attraction!
(He watches as Pauline and Derek place their tributes for Janine).
Kelly: Come on Zo, it’s getting too morbid. Let’s go to the stall.
Spencer: Yep, let’s see what fish is on offer now!
(Kelly, Zoe and Spencer and Martin wander off in the direction of their stalls. Sasha is busy flirting with Adi under the glowering gaze of Dan Ferreira).
Barry: She was a wonderful girl, Frank! I would’ve been so proud to have become your son-in-law.
(An over-emotional Barry rambles on about how fine a woman Janine had been in great length, he sings her praises so eloquently that those near enough to hear wonder whether he’s trying to convince himself of her fine qualities rather than believing every word he utters. Frank is too choked to reply instead he turns to Pat and together they stroll away arms around each other. They pass Ian Beale who just watches silently).
