It was around the third time it happened that Uther realized. It seemed a bit suspicious that every time a magical problem appeared in the Kingdom, Arthur’s manservant and Gius the physician were always the ones to make him aware of it. He appreciated the help, of course, but something within him, that part of himself that still burns whenever the word magic is uttered, that part of him couldn’t let it go.
He watched them rather closely. Something was off about the whole thing. Why could only these two people in the entire Kingdom inform him of what was going on unless they themselves knew magic? Practiced it even?
‘This can not go on,’ he had thought to himself. ‘How can I rule this Kingdom and take care of the people within it if I have two magic practitioners right under my nose?’ All rational thought had left him by this point. Sure, he could act out a façade. He was the King, and being King required a façade. As he smiled and said ‘Thank you for your help Gius,’ he was planning, plotting until he could snare them.
And then he did and the fire that burned in his heart raged. It was fierce and deadly and he used it to drive him to make the command. They would burn at sundown tonight. Of course Arthur, Morgana and her maid tried to stop him, but the crackle of the fire made him deaf. He would not, could not be persuaded.
Now, as he stood watching the fire that burned in his heart come to life, he felt a slight twinge of regret. How could he kill people who had served him so loyally? And then he thought ‘What is it worth to trust these people when they had been lying to him for years?’ The thought eased that tight feeling in his chest, and the fire raged on.
