Last night Adam and I along with friends Jason and Kim went to the Weird Al concert. Due to the smiling ticket gods and Adam's mad internets skillz, we had second row tickets!!! The seats were amazing. First and foremost, the venue is more intimate and old school. There is no pit area between the stage and the audience. There is the stage and then there is the first row! Second, my seat (thank you everyone in our group for letting me sit there) was an aisle seat with really no one in front (the first row ahead of us had one less seat), it also happened to be right next to the stairs by which Al would periodically come off the stage. We were also close enough that Weird Al would stare at us during parts of his songs. Depending on the persona, he sometimes get this wide-eyed crazy person look and just focused on someone in the audience. Our group got to be those fortunate few several times!
Weird Al definitely entertained. Two thumbs way up from me. The man's energy is nothing short of manic. It amazes me that he can bring this same enthusiasm and motion to stage night after night. His voice sounds just as good, if not better in person, some of those high notes he hit and sustained - wow. Of course, he brought the funny. And his costume changes perfectly fit the music. During the costume changes he would broadcast clips on the screen, some of Weird Al TV, others of cartoons or movies featuring Weird Al, and some just random things. The show just seemed to flow seamlessly for 2 hours and 20 minutes. He performed many of my personal favorite songs including "Bob" and "The Saga Begins" (best stage performance, dancing storm troopers, what more could you ask for). He also managed to do a couple medleys of many of his songs. The man has such a repertoire that he could have kept going with great songs for at least another two hours. While the crowd, in typical polite-let-your-neighbor-see fashion, did not stand during the main performance, the end brought us to our feet and had us standing the frenetic encore.
The best part of the whole night though came when Al was literally nose to nose with me. During the song "Wanna B Ur Lover," Al came off stage and then proceeded to come over to me, all wide-eyed crazy look, and sing a line in my face coming nose to nose with me. If I had moved even a centimeter I would have been touching his face. I think he may have had his foot on the armrest of my chair, but I can't really remember. All I remember was looking him in the eye and smiling. He then went down the aisle and sang to a few more people. Sigh. My brush with celebrity, appropriately the nerdy kind ;)
Jason has also blogged about the experience:
