I took several dozens of black-and-white photos while in China, quite a few of which I'll post here in the next few days. For now, here's a short series to start things off, taken in Pingyao, Shanxi. For the non-Sinologists among you, Pingyao is China's best-preserved walled town, with lots of gorgeous, not overly restored Ming/Qing-era buildings and the country's only surviving completely intact city wall. The whole place is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and is very much worth a detour, even if many of its charms are hard to capture on photo.
The city wall in all its splendour. In the old days, most towns in China
had such walls; apparently this is the only one still in existence.
A late-afternoon stroll on the wall. One of the watch towers.
The same tower from a different angle.
View from a wall: Pingyao rooftops, as seen from the wall.
Blurry, I know, but I love the decorated brick walls and the lines that
they create. Although I guess this would have worked better as a panorama
photo.
