[TECH] Lightroom 3 Beta 2 Noise Reduction

May 11, 2010 05:09

Whilst I'm waiting for Minifest pics to export and upload, I thought I'd update this with something...

Presenting ianiceboy

And...

ianiceboy again

Yes, ianiceboy is awesome. but more importantly, see the speckles in the first pic? That's digital noise. And a camera shooting at high sensitivity has this problem. How high are we talking about? most film, as we remember it (as i still shoot it), has a sensitivity level of ISO400. the above photos were on ISO6400, a 3 fold increase (and such a high level that film doesn't exist at this speed.). that's the K7's max limit.

The second photo is from Lightroom 3 Beta 2. we're using it's noise removal function. so much less noise it's not funny.

Let's pixelpeep, shall we?

a nice comparison. if pushed, i could shoot with ISO6400 but i'd rather not shoot higher than 1600. Still, that's better than "would rather not shoot above ISO800" that i'd use to do with LR2.

Problem is that LR3 is only in beta. And until it gets out of beta, i can't reimport my photos and redo the noise reduction
