by Mistress Quickly
“Congratulations,” said Danny, reaching out to ruffle Fletcher’s hair, a motion he’d seen Russel do countless times and had always wanted to do himself. Fletcher chuckled and ducked, almost avoiding the attack.
Almost.
“Thanks,” he said, blushing a little. “I was just glad we could come home to tell Brother and Al and Edward. It’s better, this way.”
“Absolutely,” said Danny, laughing as his lover smacked Edward for something, crossing the room hug Winry, giggling at something she said to him, too quietly for anyone else to hear. “Oh, and thanks, by the way. I bet Al you’d pop the question before your twenty-first birthday. He owes me dinner, now.”
Fletcher grinned. “What’d he bet?”
“That you’d do it on your birthday,” said Danny. “Which is next week, right?”
“Mmm-hmm,” said Fletcher, “but that doesn’t mean you won the bet. You both lost, actually.”
Danny cocked his head, frowning at the younger man. “How do you mean?”
Fletcher’s grin only widened. He held up his hand, showing off the beautiful silver band on his fourth finger, a match to the one Winry wore on her left hand. “I never asked,” he said. “All I did was say ‘yes.’”
It took Danny a moment, but when he got it, he slapped his forehead and groaned. “I should have known,” he said. “Winry’s just that kind of woman, isn’t she.”
“Best kind there is,” said the boy, stepping aside for his wife and his best friend to pass, Al leading Winry by the hand into the kitchen. Fletcher patted Danny on the back. “Too bad you and Al are both spineless wimps like me. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, both of you.”
“I don’t know about that,” said Danny. “We’ve both got backbone, just don’t show it as often as your wife does.”
Fletcher’s eyes widened. “You’re going to ask him?”
“Nah,” said Danny. “And I can’t wear the ring he gave me until he tells his brother, either.”
If Russel and Edward noticed Fletcher throwing his arms around Danny, nearly knocking the older man over with the force of his hug, neither gave any sign. Cuddled together on the couch in their home, the sounds of their family echoing around them, their worlds consisted of no-one but each other.
And together, they were complete.
The end.
