All right, I'll confess: I wanted to watch Gundam Wing because I'd read a lot of Gundam Wing yaoi fanfiction and was curious about the canon.
Curiosity killed the ... well. Interest in the fandom, shall we say.
I have the suspicion that back in the day (1995), the idea of stereotypes piloting big robots was less awful than it was in 2005 when I watched it. Otherwise, they wouldn't've made nearly 50 episodes about it, would they? Well yeah, actually they probably would've, and it would've had just as big a following. I mean, look at Bleach and Naruto.
This is a series about the Brooding Angst-muffin, the Cheerful Guy with the Dark Past, the Quiet Sweet Ambiguously Seme Guy with Stupid Hair, the Cute Sweet Ambiguously Uke Guy with Massive Eyes, The Token Chinese Guy, and some pretty men who want to mess things up.
Oh and there's a girl too. A few of them. But they don't count.
The above Guys all pilot big robots and make big 'splodeys and it's all well and good except that it's BORING. Like end-of-Evangelion-TV boring.
I can see why there's so much porn of it. Gotta do something with what they gave us, especially if they're not going to do anything with it themselves.
